K & n

I have a 95 F350. I have a K & N from a buddy. Some guy told me they wreck the 7.3s All though I do have a reproduction international 7.3 diesel. Will it wreck those too??? Also how do I take off the airbox. I know there are 2 bolts but the rubber retainers are hard. help

The K & N filters have been known to allow too much dirt through and cause damage to the turbo and eventually the engine.

With all the bag JUJU about the k&n I wouldn't run one. But my buddy has had one in since 98 in his OBS in the stock intake and hasn't had any problems he is aware of. I got the S&B myself (cause it looks neat and has a good rep). But the tymar or the 6637 are probably best.

So you guys think that this K and N will suck too much dirt?? Even if properly cleaned and oiled at each oil change?? Cuz we have never had this problem with any K and N in my fathers 25 years of engine building.

It just seems unreal to me, cuz K and N put out such a quality product, and all their testing..... What have they said to these people who blame their filter for engine or turbo failure..... man im baffled.

This comes up pretty often, here's a thread that came up recently:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...-bad-idea.html

I think the issue is not the filter itself, but the seal to the airbox.

So I wanna ask a question to all of the people who have had a dirt bypass problem. When you noticed that dirt was getting by you K and N, were you also running an outerwears prefilter like this one.

http://outerwears.com/proddetail.asp?prod=3896

Im just curious as to how many were and were not. Thanks for all of the info everybody.

PS i am also gonna email or call K and N and see what they say to this.

It's not a matter of K&N wrecking motors...
It's a matter of K&B trashing TURBOS. They simply are not meant for a turbo application. I read in their literature somewhere that their filters allow more air than a stock filter becasue their filters have 'bigger holes' to let more air flow through them.
Bigger holes means larger dirt particales can get through, not good for turbos...

The 6637 filter allows more air than stock becasue it's HUGE! Only way a smaller filter (stock size) can let more air pass is if there's less media there to filter the air. Simple as that.

Jim is correct.

K&N's do not work properly till they are dirty anyways.
A dirty filter stops more dirt.
Unless you just have a good filter with lots of surface area like the 6637.

Dirt attracts dirt. So a fresh cleaned K&N passes more air unfiltered till dirt clogs up the big holes in them.

OK well now I understand the problem. But wouldnt an outerwears prefilter stop the dirt before it makes it to the K and N. I have sent an email to K and N tech to see what they think.

HMMM If they are no good why does the Border patrol use them? I have a K&N and the real problem I saw was people put oil on it and don't let it dry, sucks the oil in and dirt sticks on the impellers. 206,000 mi hauling a 6800 lbtractor and a 6000 lb boat and horse trailers.
A hole has been found in the nudist camp wall. The police are looking into it.

Like the above poster said, "Your Truck, Your call"

After all the negative stuff I have heard about the K&N's on Powerstrokes on this site time after time, I wouldn't dream of running one on my truck.

Have you done a search? There are dozens of threads about the K&N's causing dusted turbos.

Well I appreciate all of the feedback. But im gonna wait and see what K and N says about this. Because I dont imagine they will let this stand. But I may just buy an outerwears and oil it properly the way we've done for 25 years, and keep an eye on it. Thanks again
