So since the coolant filter is in the bypass tube to the degas bottle is it logical that when the filter ceases to get hot in operation that it's time to change the filter? And as such that if it's getting hot I don't need to change it?
The coolant filter is usually routed off of the heater hose, to the coolant filter, and back to the degas bottle.
Theoretically, if the filter isn't hot, coolant isn't flowing through it, however, it would take a considerable amount of debris to plug one up.
I have opened up used filters to see the amount of debris to verify its working as suggested and they work. I can't imagine plugging one up completely.
I now replace my filter about every 10k.
I personally wouldn't wait until you think it's plugged.
