I am look at ARP bolts and studs for my cylinder heads. I know studs are theoretically better. However they are almost 100 dollars more and i am on a tight budget.
I want to do this right, however if i can get away with the bolts id rather do that. i am building a 400 and it should have around 370hp and 430trq acording to the power package i bought. with ARP bolts be fine or should i go witht he studs?
^^^ This is smart advice......stock bolts should work....but in the case they are needing to be replaced or for piece of mind, replace with grade 8 bolts.....
Agree bolts should do fine. Studs make the head install easier if your engine is on a stand. but removing the head in the truck with studs could be an issue.
I did studs on my build but from everything I have read it is overkill.
Id rather be safe but i think the bolts would be fine aswell but wanted to hear it from other people.
I wouldnt do the original head bolts because of how old they are and the fatigue stresses they have been through. you are asking for problems that i dont want to work on later. That also goes with grade 8 bolts. They may have a high tensile strength but not a high fatigue rating so they may break or stretch over many cyclic repeated loading and unloading. ARP bolts/studs are a must for head bolts/studs. why skimp with something that keeps your engine combusting chamber closed.
Unless you are spraying or running some sort of boost you don't need studs. But also on that note you can get flea bay arp knock offs cheap and they will hold if your wanting to have the "look" of studs.
