So I never have looked at tire ratings before for load capacity but if (big "if") I'm understanding this correctly, I do not think my tires are going to limit me. I still think it comes back to the truck payload. I have load range "E" tires. Max Load Single is 3750 lbs. 3750 x 2 (rear tires) = 7500. My Rear GAWR is 6100. There's also a dual max load rating of 3415. 3415 x 2 = 6830. Without weighing and getting exact numbers, that would get me very close to where I need to be based on specs in the owner's manual and stickers on my truck. But I have NO CLUE if I'm understanding tire ratings correctly.

Do GMC and Ram do this, give you a huge tow capacity but much smaller payload? Or is it just Ford? Why must life lessons be so hard!?

And where are all the F250 owners that tow these huge rigs I've seen for the past few years? Maybe they were towing some of these smaller 5ers? But I swear 50% of the tow vehicles were F250's or 2500's.

Slow down just a little. You may not be as bad off (or at all). Get some numbers first and see what you are actually putting on your tires and axle as Senix suggested. Each of your tires will carry what is says on the sidewall they will carry and, yes you do have two of them on the back (just kidding here). Learning curves are always hard, that is why these forums exist. None of us have all the answers.

so far your lower number is your rear axle rating of 6100 lbs.

As Steve suggested, get it on the scales so you know how much you have before you max out the axle rating.

Every now and then I imagine how much less stress I would have if we didn't love the whole camping scene (and boating). My wife calls it Glamping. But if we didn't do this, we would probably just eat out and watch tv. So.....it's worth the stress, money, and mistakes. I'm hoping I'm close. I don't mind driving 55 - 60 mph down the highway if that's what it takes. But every other year we do a 6000 mile trek. Next trek is included below. The numbers are the miles. Going from Glacier to Banff would be uncharted territory. I do not know what the roads will be like? How high the passes are. Before we do it I'll go over an altitude map and trace my route to see what lies in store. 2014 we did a similar trek (take out California and Canada) driving an ecoboost F150 with 7000 lb trailer. It was AWESOME! I went slower than most. I passed a truck every now and then. This is ultimately what I'm worried about. Can I do the below trip without breaking the truck! I don't care if I have to go slow or if I can feel the trailer. I just want to be able to control the situation. So every 2 years, we probably tow 7000 miles. The other years, we may tow 2000.

Schedule Miles
Leave (arrive in OK rest area) 900
Leave rest area (arrive in AZ location) 925
Stay in Grand Canyon 2 nights
Leave GC (arrive in Yosemite) 600
Stay in Yosemite 3 nights
Leave Yosemite (arrive in Lake Tahoe) 151
Stay in Lake Tahoe 2 nights
Leave Lake Tahoe (arrive in West) 776
Stay in West Yellowstone 1 night
Leave West (arrive in Bozeman) 89
Stay in Bozeman 2 nights
Nick flies home
Nick flies to Bozeman
Stay in Bozeman 2 nights
Leave Bozeman (arrive in Glacier) 288
Stay in Glacier 2 nights
Leave Glacier (arrive in Banff) 245
Stay in Banff 3 nights
Leave Banff (arrive in Badlands) 976
Stay in Badlands 1 night
Leave Badlands (arrive home) 1,427
Arrive Home
Total 6,377

Nbettes,

So you're getting a camper this weekend. Have you already bought the camper? What hitch do you have in your truck?

Yeah. I have made offers on a fifth wheel and travel trailer. Both have been accepted.

Are you using two different, but similar screen names? nbettes and Nick Bettes? If so, pick one of them and stick with it, it will lessen the confusion of appearing to be two different people.

I agree that you need to get your truck weighed first, loaded up just like you would be heading out to go camping. I also think that your estimate of 600-650 lbs for your family of five may be a little conservative as you also stated that you plan to run this truck for many years. As well, your plan to never exceed 1000lbs of cargo in that big fifth wheel trailer may be hard to stick to over time, I know our TT is always gaining weight it seems.

From everything you've said, it sounds like you have time...your travel plans won't be possible until at least next spring, guessing you don't have a hitch, and you're considering two different campers.

You have a massively capable tow vehicle. You just need to formulate your whole rig to work with it. Hope you can relax a little and have fun doing it.

I have no clue why my name switched?? I'm logging in through my google account.

I have a 800.00 credit worked into the fifth wheel deal. I have to pay anything over that. He has a husky 1600 and a slide rite 1600 in stock. Not sure which would be best? Not sure if all hitches are created equal.

Nbettes,

You are going love having an Open Range RV. I have an Open Range RF316RLS and it is a great camper!! I pull ours with a F350 SRW.

I am within 140lbs of my truck limits (11,360lb, with trailer attached, CAT scaled). My truck has a 11,500lb GVWR and my camper has a 12,485lb GVWR. My trucks GCWR is 23,500lb.

Here is my CAT scale weights (ready for camping);
5200 Steer axle
6160 Drive axle
8420 Trailer axles
19780 Gross Weight

With that being said, comparing 316RLS vs 367FBH specs, you are going to be way overweight with a F250. I also believe my F350 would be overweight with a 367FBH. Looks like that trailer needs a Dually.

Sorry!!!

Don't know the distances from Cumming to these.
Do you have a local city dump with scales. Concrete company? state weigh station?
