Cylinder Head/Block Cleaning

You've all been incredibly helpful thus far, and I think I have just one more question. While I know there are many, and widely varied opinions on how this should be approached, I went with the sharpening stone/lube method for cleaning my heads and block. After watching many videos etc on the subject, this seemed a well recommended method from several different mechanics who do this often.

So I started with the heads and slowly worked on them until all the blue headgasket material was removed. I could also see the marks from the original factory machining. Consensus seems to be not to remove the staining. The staining isn't consistent around each hole on the head, but all blue material was removed. Is this as far as I should go? Or should I go further? After I cleaned it to this point, I measured in the 13 locations given by Ford with a .002" feeler and precision straight edge, and with the straight edge laying on the feeler with nothing but the force of gravity, the straight edge would move when I pulled on the feeler. So there was tension on the feeler at each location.

As always, thank you for your input.

I used the same method for the block and then when I got to the head I had a brass wire wheel I put in my drill, it cleaned them up quite nice and the brass won't mark the heads. Warp checked them the same way and had the same result, they head gaskets weren't leaking so I did expect any major warps. The help on here is awesome ain't it? I would remove and lube the manifold bolts while they are easy to get at, they rust quite badly in Northern climates and mine will come out if need be. Hopefully no need.

Thank you! Yes this site is pretty amazing. This being my first foray into the 6.0, trying to take my time and learn all I need to. Hoping that if I do everything as properly as possible, I may be one of those with good 6.0 experiences, lol.

How many miles on the motor since you did yours? Any other mods? How'd your heads look when you were done? Still have the staining similar to mine, or all shiny? Thanks again.

0 miles, couple hundred feet is all. The engine is running fine so it's I am now getting ready to paint it. This was also my first time under the hood of a 6.0 so I went all in too. I did the ARP studs, EGR delete, oil cooler and 12mm dummy plugs. Mine were a bit cleaner do to the brass wire wheel, it did a great job on them. Lots of learning happening here that's for sure. Between FTE and youtube you can't find out just about everything .
