First fill up
First fill up
I have a seen a couple threads where guys were concerned because their gauge read empty but didn't come close to filling their tank up to whatever capacity it is. Well today I was on Empty and was watching the miles to empty drop faster than the miles no was driving. Went and filled up and the tank only took 27 gallons to the fill neck. Capacity should be 34 from what I read.
For this rod you who have had your trucks a little longer, do the fill ups get a little more accurate?
My first tank was over 15mpg, so was pretty pleased with that, hoping for better in the future.

I think it calculates miles to empty based off current avg fuel economy..
Guess it comes from years in the fire department but i always fill up as soon as she hits 1/4 tank, 3 fill ups so far and all have been 24-27 gallons on the 34 gal tank

Also on my 2011 it would show 0 miles and I could go 50-60 more miles and still have fuel left in the tank.
the only way to really confirm the gallons would be to complete drain a tank, drop it, remove the float and pickup tube. Then refill to where it just get to the tube, to measure unusable, then continue filling till full. then drain and reinstall. It is a lot of work though.
I have 6.2L with 48 gal tank. First fill up:
- 11.2 mpg over about 150 miles (on trip computer, all in-town driving)
- 52 miles to empty on computer
- 41.8 gal to full tank shown on gas pump
So, at least on the gasser, looks like a 1-2 gallon reserve for computations. Seems just about right to me. Don't know if diesel is calibrated more conservatively. I'm coming up on my second fuel up, I'll check again.
Gas mileage has improved by about 0.7 mpg overall with similar driving habits for this tank, so I should hit close to 550 miles from a tank.

This may make you feel better.
I'm really interested in a new body Suoer Duty when my lease is up. See, I'm really a Ford guy and had a fight with my dealer and ended up trading my 14 F150 on a new Tundra Crewmax. I had 1.5 years left on the F150 and got a 2 year on the Tundra.
Emotional decision made out of frustration. Anyway, the Tundra does what I need it to do right now.
So, the reason for posting.
The Tundra has a 38 gallon tank. I reset the trip meter every fill up. The last tank I ran it down to "13 miles until empty". It took 29.6 gallons or so. 396 miles on that tank.
Yes it's a thirsty booger. But it's not only Ford with the issue.

It really pizzes me off that the newer vehicles are deciding for me and arbitrary number for empty. Empty should mean ZERO gallons of fuel in the tank, not 4, 6, 8 or 5.3 gallons. DTE should mean you just ran out of fuel when it reaches 0 miles to empty. AND even worse is the constant nagging before getting to 0 miles to empty when there is indeed ample fuel to drive a hundred or so miles. Once you pass empty there is no way to tell how much you have left, other than a wing and a prayer.
I guess I will reset my trip gauge when I hit "0" on my DTE. I know I went at least 10 miles past last time and couldn't squeeze in 31 gallons. I don't want to do this but I feel I would like to know how far I can go and if the tank will ever take 34 gallons.
