Transmission shift question

I know that there are other post out there concerning shifting, but has anyone experienced a hard shift in the lower gears, especially when the vehicle is cold in the morning? From 1st to 2nd in the morning my truck will sometimes shift very hard. Of course when I took it to the dealer they said there were "no error codes" and they could not find a problem. Which is a typical answer any more from any dealer it seems.

I get the lower gear hard shift when it's cold, but it doesn't happen that often anymore. As I've put more miles on the truck, the transmission has been feeling better. I thought the TSB for the transmission reflash applies to the lower gear hard shift/clunk too?

I get a hard shift on occasion in the morning when it is cold. I live on a corner lot so my driveway is not far from the end of the street. It is just far enough that when I come to the cross street the transmission is shifting to second or about to shift to second when I left off the gas to slow and look for traffic. So the transmission shifts to second and then immediately jumps back to first because I am coming to a stop or just barely moving.

Other than that particular circumstance I rarely ever have a hard shift from first to second. I have had a couple hard downshifts in to 4th gear as well. But again, it doesn't happen often. The harsh downshift has only happened 2-3 times in 15,000 miles.

FYI: I have not had the transmission flashed at the dealer. Not sure if I am going to do that or not. I have heard of people having issues after having the flash done.

Unless you have a near catastrophic transmission problem, there won't be any codes. These transmissions have had their concerns, and most of it is the firmwars on the TCM. A tech who says 'no code' translates into I am lazy and do not want to research anything.

My biggest concern is that when the warranty runs out so will the tranny. The one drawback of Ford is the short warranty as compared to GM and Dodge. I have not yet had the opportunity to tow anything heavy to see how the tranny works under load but I may just take it back to the dealer a few more times for documentation sake even if they won't do anything. If any of you have a SC F150 how smooth is your ride also?

Take it back 3 times then file lemon law paperwork. it's easy and it usually gets the dealers attention.

Update:

Well I had my truck back in the shop last Friday and they kept it till Monday. I was told that they updated the PCM / TCM with the latest and greatest program. It is early but I have to say I definately noticed a difference in how it shifts. It is very smooth. If it stays like this I will be happy again If any of you have this issue it may be worth talking to your dealer to see if there is a new program available for your truck.

I had a slow upshift from 1st to 2nd and a hard downshift to 1st, especially when cold. The dealer did a reflash to update the program. It is now fine when upshifting but still somewhat of a thud when downshifting. More noticable when cold but still there sometimes when warmed up. I only have 1500 miles on it and am planning to give it some more miles and see if it improves. Otherwise it's back for the second time.

I had my truck flashed under the TSB and yes the 2-1 hard shift is gone. From my experience I would stick with that problem.
Now it takes pretty much WOT to get it to kick down into 1st (such as puling out in to traffic). I also have hard, no violent, shift down into 4th? The first time it happened I though someone rear-ended me!

I think you should wait several thousand miles to let your truck break-in and for your transmission to learn your driving style. Then if still problems, get the reflash done. Also, there have been reports of a noticeable loss of power after getting the reflash. My dealer service advisor also told me that.

Thanks, good people. Sounds like going to the first oil change at 5k is the thing to do. Let the transmission settle in and the computer get those test drives from before I bought it out of its mind. We'll see what happens.
I'm retired, therefore older, and the idea of fixing slow and hard shifts in the transmission by re-programming the computer is a little difficult for me to accept. I am fixable, though. Just need a little re-programming.

It doesn't take thousands of miles to 'break in'. I would take it in pronto. You are hurting yourself if you have to lemon your truck. They start at the point you first took your truck in.

The problem I notice with my trucks shifts are when you are going about 40 mph on a slight grade like a interstate overpass with light throttle I get a groaning kind of sound like it is not sure on what gear to choose. The truck only has 1500 miles on it so we will see.

What model truck do you own, body style, motor and tranny?
