New Truck
After some serious thought and research I finally found the forum I want to join, been lurking several searching for the one with the best IDI following and friendly helpful peeps. So hear I am.... trying to contribute back to the forum I have gathered a lot of information from. Here is my story...
Well over a year of searching I finally found my dream truck.
A beautiful 1986 F350 XLT Lariat with a 6.9 under the hood and 4 spd. She has 90,000km on her but the odometer may have rolled over once or thrice. I will be the third owner, previous owner bought it with a blown engine and 10,000km ago put in a 83 6.9 that seems tight, no blow by, no excessive smoke, no starting issues and new clutch.
So after several phone calls and an email I made the 1800 km road trip and got the beauty back home and the work started. New fluids and filters, brakes, brake booster, vac pump, CDR valve, tires and windshield. Doors off of 91 and a new front fender.
More body work and paint is in her future, but she did great pulling my chariot and ATV up the dirt road to hunting camp. I think I am in love....
Cheers,
Shawn
Just remember, you've got an 83 6.9.
Being an early motor, there are a couple of things to be aware of:
1. Don't use the block heater. The block can crack right there due to the heating I guess.
I've /got/ an early 6.9 motor where this happened before I got it, so I know it's not just an urban legend.
2. The older 6.9 style rockers are a weaker design than the newer 7.3 style ones; they can break between the two rockers. Not saying you want to go in there and change them, but it's something to be aware of.
There's a whole other list of improvements by year to the engine, but I'm not sure where to find it again.
That aside, if you are hauling with it... when are you going to put a turbo on it? A 6.9 should be able to handle a ~10 PSI kit(like Banks, Hypermax or ATS), and you'll nearly double your HP while adding fuel economy at higher RPMs. You might also want to put a set of headstuds in it for added protection if you are in there working on it.
i looked along time for just the right one ..
it's a thing of beauty when it all works out and you find it ..
i have also the 6.9 4speed 4x4 .. there's alot to love ..
you two are going to have a long and rewarding future ..
what color are you gonna paint her ?
I haven't fully decided on a turbo install, we will see how the wallet is feeling after the body work is complete.
I was originally going to paint her red/white like the doors but the brown is starting to really grow on me. So she may just get a new shiny coat of light brown.
