Thanks for the encouragement fellas. Plan on the rear adjustment tomorrow, if pedal is still loose, I'll get a booster Tuesday or as soon as ordering allows. The really sad part is, I would get frustrated after breaking a single line when undoing things, and let it go for a wek cause' I don't need her. I've missed driving her, just haven't needed it real bad. I've done intermediate brake work before too, but with help of manuels and less to diagnose. This has been a test of pateince and confidence also. Confidence came up though today, starting to see the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel now. Figures the friggin' booster would poop out. Hey 71' glad to another Virginian on the board. We live just west of Culpeper, about 1/2 hour out of Fredricksburg. Help would be awesome, but I think it's a little out of your way. But when I rebuild the motor or tranny............ ,until tomorrow, Blair
Hope the booster works out. Sounds like you're a little over an hour away. I'm about 45 minutes south of Fredericksburg. I see you have a Galaxie also. I've been working on my '71 LTD for almost three years now. They are some great cars. Only a paint job away from having it finished. I don't have decent (and safe) heat in my shop for painting in cold weather so I am waiting until spring to do the paint job. So I am picking at the '75 150 this winter. Trying to undo all of the things that happen when these trucks sit for a while. I hope to have the LTD in Fredericksburg at the show this summer. Good luck on the brakes.
I have a question about the booster unit. What if any other year truck's booster will fit mine?? Mine is a 79', and some other guys and I have some parts trucks, wondering just for the weekend since I desperately need the truck could I swap a booster from a donor truck. All the parts suppliers are saying Monday at the earliest. I promised some work out to my Mom and really, really need the truck. I'm not hauling old shingles in my wife's Windstar you know? She wants a couple cords of wood too. Shame I don't have my 86' from Maryland yet. Would any other years work, if so, what options need I be careful of? Thanks, BLT
Hey 71LTD, what show is in Fredricksburg? I plan on doing some suspension work and stuff on the Gal. Where and when is it?
78, I had a nightmare of a time with my brakes when I converted to 4x4. Heres a little of what I learned. You are well on your way to getting done, but I wouldn't skimp out on the booster. If you really want to know, there are two styles of master cylinders. I have a 74 and the rod goes straight to the brake pedal. Newer ones ( I believe 77.5 and up) have a toggle linkage in the mounting bracket, so the rod is only like an inch or 2. You would have to compare to be sure, but I think any later ones would work. My personal opinion is to just go to the auto parts store and exchange for a reman. I did the used thing, and in the end just got a new one. I had a similar problem, but mine would start out with power and then seep (creep?) to the floor. Very disconcerting when you go to stop. If you can afford the cost of a reman(I think mine was about $130) definitely go for it, and then you won't have to worry about it. By the way, If your master leaks out the back, the fluid will ruin the diaphragm in the booster. Make sure the booster is fine first. Good luck, Ted
Thanks for the advise Ted. I went ahead and placed an order for a reman booster. I'm going to use my Stepsdad truck this weekend, the booster should be in late Monday. Better safe than sorry at this point, and no reason to cut corners. Thanks again, Blair
The show is at the Walker Grant Middle School (really close to Purvis Ford). It's usually during the summer. I haven't heard when it's going to be next year. It's usually in the paper, though.
My LTD front suspension was shot. It's amazing how much difference new parts make. I had to replace everything south of the steering column. Luckily the 75 F150 is in pretty good shape, except the radius arm bushings look tired.
