What would be a good, reasonably priced scanner I can pick up to read what I need to read so 1. I don't have to continually harass the crap out of you guys with questions and 2. When I do have questions regarding the 6.0 I can at least give you enough info that you can point me in the right direction . I can get a Scanguage II for a couple hundred bucks that seems to be able to give me the info I need. Thanks folks.
Scan Gauge II at Advance Auto, buy one on line, use code TRT30, SAVE $50, program it yourself, reads good data, reads codes like crap. $120 after discount.
Torque Pro, Android software $5, ELM327 OBD device $25 off ebay... cheaper, does everything.
ForScan free software, uses ELM327 devise... better, not very portable as its not a take it in the truck for rides everyday. It's a stay at home trouble shooting laptop.
I recently had a crank, no start situation on a road trip with my 5th Wheel (while my SGII sat in my F-150 200 miles away).
I originally ran the SGII in my F-350 but moved it over to my F-150 when I picked up SCT Livewire+ for the big truck. But I noticed that the SCT doesn't read reliably when cranking. I missed having the SGII (so I've bought a second one to carry full time in F-350).
ForScan is free for Windows. It cost $5.00 for the IPhone /IPad App. I use a ELM327 that does both wireless and Bluetooth. I'm still not that deep into it to know if the Windows version does more in depth than the iPhone/iPad. I use both.
Thinking about buying a low cost android tablet to learn about torque pro.
Rusty that is a great in depth write up. I've gone back to it a few times.
Thanks all for the info, all I have ever needed till now was an OBDII hand held but with the learning curve on this 6.0 I need something more detailed. I suppose I am a little behind the times tech wise and it shows. I built a lot of trucks but mostly 77-79's, but I will fight my way through most anything before I pay someone to fix MY truck , between this forum and some youtube stuff you can learn quite a bit pretty friggin fast. The first repairs I have ever done on a 6.0 only started last month and that was doing the head gasket, egr and oil cooler , all with help from FTE and you tube.
Rusty , I used that link and read you post, I am sure I am not alone when I say thank you for taking the time to put that together. It's a very good comparison without getting so technical a person gets lost in the information.
So with all that I think I will go with the SGII and see where that gets me.
Great thought but we don't have Advance auto up here, none I have seen anyway, I can get one for 200 CND which works out to be close to the same , we are getting hosed on the exchange rate, .72cents on the dollar.
Didn't mean to double post that.
YES you are, getting screwed....sorry.
I have done that a couple times and can never figure out how to delete a post. I loved when the dollar was even for a few years, I bought my dually, on EBAY, down in Florida, my sled came from Maine, took a boat back for my brother in law and a 5th wheel back for me. Losing 26-27% on the dollar makes it had to shop.
After tax, at 15% the scanguage will run me 230 at the door, not bad considering the aggravation it can save. I miss the military sometimes, if I didn't have it at home I just signed it out for the night, day or whatever. Even borrowed a 5HP industrial compressor for 2 years. lol

IDS... as good as it gets, $3000+
You forgot the Clone IDS VCMII option. Much less than $3K
Laptop that can run XP and some $ but not too bad.
PM me if you want more info. There is a learning curve to it
but once you know what your doing things get much better.
