Lower control arm removal question

2003 F150 5.4 4x4 Lariat FX4

Hello all, I am going to be replacing most of the components on my front end this week, upper & lower control arms, steering knuckles, inner & outer tie rods, ball joints, shocks, brakes.

When you go to remove the lower control arm, what needs to be done with the torsion bar? Do I need to Back the keep bolt off most of the way? Or do I need to use a torsion bar key holder?

first off, I would question if the lower arm actually need replaced ? Are the mounts/ bushings that bad ? Second, if you do want to remove them, you need to back the torsion bar screws out completely to get all tension off the lower arms, then lower the arm down prior to removing the bolts.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking needed to be done.

And there's enough rust & scaling on the lower arms for me to warrant replacing them, especially with upgrading to larger tires next week. I ordered a Complete front end kit, should work out really nice!

Same issue

So I’ve unbolted the lower control arm it’s hanging by the torsion bar. So there shouldn’t be tension on it... so no need to do anything with the keys.. but I can’t seperate the control arm still. Did you end up cutting it or what?

the arm is often rusted SOLID to the torsion bar.. You can heat / beat/ spray / push and HOPE..... or cut the arm without damaging the torsion bar......... then wire brush / surface grind the bar to fit the new arm.
