Yeah, I'd think they would be good to go in that case. I have used WD-40 and this yellow cream hand cleaner to put hoses on when I worked in field service for a Caterpillar dealer.
It helped them slide right on but, kind of glued them on once dried. Never had one leak. I don't remember the name of the hand cleaner. Yellow plastic can. Goop maybe?
The engine shop even used it on the seals for liners.
So even with Indian head we still had a lower hose leak. Took it back to the shop and they used a rounder to help reshape the outlet and then polished the fitting. In the process they found the culprit, a small hairline crack in the lower pipe. They soldered it and reshaped the clamp groves. Installed it tonight and no leaks after a 30 minute night run.
These old tanks are largely copper. It was very common for owners to do their own repairs because of that. In fact, there is a Canadian penny soldered to the center of my upper tank, on the outward side. I get a lot of comments about it, with people asking why a Canadian penny was placed there. I let them guess for a while before I let them in on the secret.
Tank is copper, pennies are copper, (US and Canadian), copper takes to solder well. Job done. Pin hole leaks were often corrected/repaired with pennies and the fix can last the life of the tank.
If you can solder your old plumbing, it is very likely you can repair an original tank.
An added thought. The same rules of plumbing apply here. No moisture inside the solder joint. Give it day to dry out, or heat the surrounding area until the steam is gone and the area surrounding the patch is dry.
