To be fair, VW uses both systems depending on platform and each has their advantages and disadvantages. The wheel speed system is far simpler, but it is more susceptible to false positives while driving and detection of an actual loss in pressure takes longer than the RF based in-wheel sensors. But the RF systems are finicky as well and there are more components to fail (like the perpetually missing data from one wheel on my Audi. )
Let’s not forget that it is Ford’s fault in the first place that we even have TPMS mandated on vehicles. They are hyper-catious about tire inflation and loading now so they must have good reason for choosing the monitoring system they do.
