Picked up a rebuildable 351 from the junk yard today. It had e5ae heads. I've heard that the c9oe and the d0oe are better. So how much would I gain going with the c9 or d0 heads.
I have E5AE-CA heads listed as 1985 302 heads so if they are 302 heads older 351 would be an improvement or one of the newer gt-40/gt-40p designs and run a little more than the c9 or do you mentioned. Going from a crappy stock to a little better stock will give you roughly 20-30 extra hp or that seems to be the rule of thumb. Just a thought, good luck
Another thing to remember is that with the older 69 and 70 heads that you mentioned you will have to install hardened seats. Your best bet would be to either just use what you have or buy something better depending on your budget. Gt40 and Gt40p's would be a cheap improvement but better money spent than the 69 and 70's
I agree with quentrm250; there is no point in digging up a 30 yr old set of castings and reworking them. A set of Windsor Jrs./Roush 180's are a better deal. GT40P heads have been shown to provide a 20+ hp increase on a 351 (over the C9/D0 heads) simply due to the better chamber design. In fact, those C9 and D0 heads have virtually the same exhaust flow as 302 heads even with the bigger valves.
I have to disagree here but, that's just me. I think the 69's are better just because they aren't aluminum. They can stand a little porting and they should flow as good as the gt-40's but the best part is that they are more forgiving if you get them hot.
Are you thinking about the GT-40X? I'm not really sure, but I think that's the aluminum one. The GT-40 and GT-40P are both cast iron. I have a set of the GT-40P's for my Bronco (not installed yet ) and I can assure you they are not aluminum.
I agree that the GT-40 or GT-40P heads are probably a better solution. I bought my GT-40P's on Ebay for $250.00, and they are ready to go. No fooling with hardened seats and overly high compression. For a good comparison on cast iron heads see the following link:
The gt40 and gt40p heads are both cast iron. Again I recommend not wasting money on old casting heads and put your money toward some more modern better designed heads. GT40P's will outflow 69 heads in stock form and are very cheap. Well worth the money.
Well if you run across a single GT40-P head I have a brand new one I'd sell for $225 plus shipping. Complete with valves and springs. I had the springs tested once.......can't remember 100% for sure but I believe they were good to .550 lift.
This is where I purchased mine and everything was excellent. Mine were complete and this particular set is not, but he seems to have an almost limitless supply of them...
Really don't want the p heads. Does anyone know what the gt-40 came out on? I want the ones with the angled spark plugs don't want to spend a fortune for headers.
I'm fairly certain that the GT40 heads come from the Lightning engines.
Actually, I'm not aware of anyone that makes headers for the "P" head that are Bronco specific, and I have done some looking. Someone told me that Central Coast Mustang has some, but I have not been able to confirm that yet. There are some headers that certainly won't work without direct intervention from a ball-peen hammer, however Ford makes a set of stainless shorties for the Mustang that will work for either GT40 or GT40P heads (Ford Motorsport M-9430-P50)
How this will work in terms of exit angle from the Bronco engine compartment I am not sure.
I would prefer full length headers, so my plan (if I can not find a set that work) is to use 90 degree plug wire boots and install the plugs before the headers if necessary. If it's anything like other headers I've owned I'll be changing header gaskets more frequently than plugs anyway...
