If I can just find one with the same power in a 1/2", I'll be one happy boy.. Of course, I'll have to replace every single fastener I touch, but I'll be laughing all the way.
Here's how you get more power out of your 1/2":
I assume you are using the 1/4" air fittings, correct?
Convert to 3/8" air fittings and hose for the impact only. Make sure there is NO reduction, so you may have to swap out the screen in the handle to take the larger 3/8" air fitting.
It works.
Actually, we're already running 3/8" on just about everything but tire-chucks and simple stuff. We even run it for the D/A's.. And, yeah, it does help. But, in reality, I don't need any more power, I break enough stuff as it is..
WoodiN1, You said you were messin with Budd wheels. Its been my experience as a heavy diesel mechanic that a 1/2" will not do a good job on these. I have some real good IR & Blue Point 1/2" impacts and I have had some of the nuts and the studs work loose. I broke down and bought a Blue Point 3/4" with the extended anvil, and it is the best thing I ever did for working with large nuts/bolts. I have never had a Budd or Dayton nut or stud come loose using the 3/4" impact. It comes in handy working with spring u-bolts too. If you ask a large truck tire guy what 1/2" impact he uses to change tires he will laugh you out of town. They all use either 3/4",1", or spline drive. The Budd socket you want can be purchased at any of the big tool houses. I know Snap-On, Mack,Matco have websites you can purchase from. I'll bet Harbor freight has a site too. If you do get a big impact, invest in a length of 1/2" air line and fittings so it will perform at its full potential.
Originally posted by tigerman It's my understanding that one shouldn't use an impact tool to torque set anything. But rather one should use the Torque wrench itself. May our Moderator Torque 1st can elaborate on that.....or whoever????
ever hear of a torque stick? they are calibrated and used for torquing wheels, they are available in ranges from 70-150 ft-lbs
and are for use with impact guns.
I use an impact wrench turned down low to seat my lug nuts. I then finish the job with a torque wrench. You can get the calibrated torque sticks for use with an impact wrench but they do not seem to be very accurate, and they are expensive for hobby use.
I agree with Ggg6 about the need for a super high torque impact for lug nut work on the Budd wheels, but the only set of Budd wheels I have are on this little mini-schoolbus and I hope I never have to work on anything else like it. According to my manual the wheels should be torqued to 210 Ft. lbs. My 1/2 inch impact should handle that. Also I did find a cheap Budd socket for my application at Harbor Freight.
I my younger years, I worked at Firestone. We had a huge splined impact and really hammered the truck tires on.
I just got my new Snap-on 1/2", was considering the ir titanium, but just couldn't do it...I put the snap-on on a F350 dually Dana 80 diff pinion nut, took 2 hits and then off it came...Torque value=450 ft lbs...
I am happy...
P.S. I not only have the high-flow 1/4" fittings(which have larger holes then the 3/8" fittings, they also have the quick connect feature..(you dont have to pull the collar when you insert the male fitting, just insert it and click, it locks...
I have had several 1/2 inch impacts over the years. Some from Craftsman, IR and Snap-on. None of them gave me the performance I wanted on a daily basis. I recently purchased a Matco MT1759Q and cannot believe how great this thing is. It is a twin hammer, composite body impact that is lightweight (about 4-1/2 lbs) and offers 610 ft-lbs of reverse torque. It is Also the QUIETEST impact I have ever seen. I cannot say enough good things about this tool.

I bought an Ingersoll 231 off ebay for $40, works absolutely great, 450ftlbs. I see them at Lowe's and other places for $109 new....nice unit for the money. I've used a Snap On Blue Point back to back on the same bolt and the IR has more grunt, but is bulkier.
Just picked up a Porter Cable off the clearance rack at Lowe's, $60 with 500ftlb of reverse torque. It's much bulkier then the IR, but it has much nicer torque settings (the IR basically torques to 125+ even on lowest setting) and so far it's every bit as powerful.
I recently bought a powerforce impact (made by ingersoll I think) at wal mart for $80 on clearance, 400lbs/ft , it was in a case with an air rachet and 5 sockets. I was looking at impacts at the northern tool website www.northerntool.com, they have a lot of choices. There is a new one that got my interest from air-cat $130 It is high power 640 lbs/ft , light weight and quiet. The products look interesting. http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...-cat&PHOTOS=ON www.aircat.com
