Hey guys. I've been lurking around for a while. Thanks for all the useful information, its helped me a bunch.
A little back story. I purchased a 2000 4X4 V10 with 63,000 miles. It sat with very little movement for 12 years or so. I have been driving it for a few months and it now has 73,000 on it.
To my question. I have an high idle after start up. After the engine starts the idle goes up to 2K but comes back down to normal(1K or so). It takes a second or to 2 for the idle to drop. This seems strange to me. Is this normal? I've done some searching and found plenty on high idles but none seem to fit this condition.
Not a big V10 guy, but a few basics out of the way:
1) Welcome, we like pictures
2) Do your symptoms arise only on cold starts, or is it every single start regardless of temperature and frequency? Like if you turn it off after driving for 30 minutes then immediately restart it, does it still kick the idle up?
Here she is. This is my second Excursion I've owned. I had a 2000 4X2 5.4L years ago. My brother still has it. I missed having one and glad to be back in the driver seat of one.
It does it every time. Regardless of temperature it starts and goes right to 2k and then slowly goes down to normal idle rpms.
reminds of the days of the manual choke...my V10 X does that a bit(run higher revs for a sec or 2 on start up) but no big dealio in my mind. I have no clue how and if choke is used or needed with fuel injection..
I would agree that it is likely the Idle Air Control valve. It's behind the intake-not in front of it where it would be easy. Just a few bolts-just a little less than easy to get to. The IAC used to be the #1 service code for the local Ford dealer per my friend the service manager
1000 RPM at idle still sounds high. High idle at start then dropping doesn't sound abnormal, most cars do, but depending on ext temps they usually drops to normal pretty quick. I'd guess 600-700 would be normal though.
We have German cars too, and they are about the smartest things I've ever seen. They'll idle up to about 2k then down to what's appropriate for the temps. They control initial engine warm up really well, making winter nice, getting good heat from the climate control really quick.
Mine will jump up to 1200-1400 on a cold start and settle down at 1,000. I have bumped my idle speed up from the factory 850 to right at 1000 with my SCT tuner to provide better charging and heat.
This has been pretty consistent over the 4 V10s I've owned. 2k is rather high even for a cold start.
