Idle?

I have an 01 Excursion 4x4 with the V-10. Is this normal?

When I start the truck it idles at about 1200 or so RPM untill it warms up then out of gear it settles in at around 1000 rpm. In gear it idles at around 850 or so once warmed up. Could this high idle be from the Idle control valve? I tried resetting the idle trim as discribed in the Manual by removeing the battery then going thru the steps listed. Seemed to smooth out the idle, but not drop it where it should be.

Also, what is the average "all working as it should" idle speed?

Thank you,

Thats what it should do. As the weather gets colder you might see it revving higher and longer before it drops down, but its fine.

When its really cold, it really revs. Its probably an emissions thing.

Yea, when its 15* out and you crank a V10, it really roars.

I have a manual transmission, and the engine idles around 750 or so when warm.

That sounds normal to me, mine starts up, swings to about 1500-2000 RPMs then comes to about 1200 or so until she gets nice and warm. In gear she sits around 750-800 or so, which from what I've read and been told is normal for these rigs. I was paranoid about mine too. By the way, can you post the method for resetting the idle trim here from the manual?

This is directly from the manual:

Because your vehicle’s engine is electronically controlled by a computer,
some control conditions are maintained by power from the battery. When
the battery is disconnected or a new battery is installed, the engine must
relearn its idle and fuel trim strategy for optimum driveability and
performance. To begin this process:
1. With the vehicle at a complete stop, set the parking brake.
2. Put the gearshift in P (Park), turn off all accessories and start the
engine.
3. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature.
4. Allow the engine to idle for at least one minute.
5. Turn the A/C on and allow the engine to idle for at least one minute.
6. With your foot on the brake pedal and with the A/C on, put the
vehicle in D (Drive) and allow the engine to idle for at least one minute.
7. Drive the vehicle to complete the relearning process.
The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to
relearn the idle and fuel trim strategy.

If you do not allow the engine to relearn its idle trim, the idle
quality of your vehicle may be adversely affected until the idle

trim is eventually relearned.

It seemed to smooth out my idle, but didnt slow it down any. With all the buzz about bad idle air control valves, I wondered if mine wasnt closing all the way causing the high idle.

Idling at 1,000 rpm in P or N and 850 rpm in D is too high when the engine is up to operating temp. I would try cleaning or replacing your IAC.

I cleaned the IAC today. I got it almost looking new on the inside and everthing moved freely. Idle stayed the same. Any other sugestions as to what may cause my high idle?

I cleaned my IAC just before I added a Volant CAI. At the time, I still thought it was idling a little high. Recently the IAC went totally crazy,https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...x-roaring.html, making a horrible sound. Instead of trying to clean it again I just replaced it. Noise is gone and the truck idles a bit lower and more smoothly. I went with a NAPA part and it was $75, Motorcraft was $125 I think. When I compared the 2, the NAPA part actually looked to be better quality. The IAC still might be your problem regardless of cleaning.
