Automatic shifting problems

OK. Trying to see if anyone has had this problem before I order parts I don't need.. my column shifter is loose or seems that way. The peg never likes to end up in the position the vehicle is in even in park. some times the shifter doesn't click in all the way into the gear or clicks out to easy etc. When I'm in standard drive I can move the shifter back and forth probably close to a full 1/2 inch or more overall. From what I gather and I haven't looked to far into it yet it's either going to be my column shifter itself or the shifter cable needs adjustment or replaced. So has anyone had this problem yet and what fixed it for you?? Thanks

A few details about your truck might make this a lot easier to diagnose. Start with what model year.

I'm not a master mechanic, no where close to mark but I did have the same problem. I adjusted the shifter cable and it seemed to work fine. Tightened it up very well. Try that first and if it doesn't work try other option

The first thing to check is the two #30 Torx screws that hold the shift cable bracket to the shift tube on the bottom of the steering column. Crawl under the dash and look back up the column. These two screws tend to loosen and cause these problems.

Was able to get up under the dash after work and they looked tight amd couldn't move them with my fingers but when I put the wrachet to them they were indeed not right at all. The one closest to the column was 1/4 or more loose. Needless to say got them tightened down and now the shift seem to work well and distinguish between gears. So that advice worked perfectly and I thank you for it. Found another problem while I was down there though. My gear selector peg needed adjusted so I went to do that and go figure the white plastic housing for the black adjustment gear is broken.. so got some wire and looped it through an empty hole on the dash frame and I've the cable housing and pulled the housing with wire down to the point of where I would have to adjust it to make the peg to its proper point.. so now the peg lines up with the gear.. so all n all I guess I had two problems which you helped me with my main one so thanks again!
