I reread this whole thread trying to find what I came here for and that was a clear idea of what a redneck really is. I just feel dumber every time I come here for some reason, maybe it's contagious. I'm outa here.
Ok, I am back from a busy couple of days and have read all of the post since I posted last. WOW! I am glad to know I wasn't hated by anyone for stating what is on my mind. I am glad to know what everyone else has thought about it and gave some feedback. Liberating is a word that seems to apply for me!
I respect everyones opinions and especially the room everyone allowed for me to express mine. Just wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
I have to admit I have grown from and am impressed with the diversity in definitions of what a Redneck is to each of us.
It appears the newest group of people who call themselves Rednecks are not as clearly defined in one way or the other as the way it was in days gone by. My childhood days would have seen a fight break out by the time anyone threw the term redneck around like you see it done today. No doubt we have mostly outgrown our sensitivity to it. I look at this in a good and bad way. Who cares? Well, I have to admit that I don't use the word to describe anyone and I don't allow my chidren to use it or any questionable words like it. There just aren't enough pluses gained in using them to outweigh the pluses of much more impressive words and phrases that our ancesters used. I would post them, but it is just going to get us sidetracked I think. Maybe a thread on the old words and phrases people used long ago would be worth starting. I guess it would be like a history lesson LOL.
I agree that the original definition will fall solid on just a vague description of a redness of a persons neck from working outside in the sun mostly. Now as time went on the definition swayed a bit towards an insinuation of someone being something derogatory like uneducated, unsophisticated, wild, white trash, etc... This list is what comes to mind for me from when I grew up. Ok, I know you are wondering what my age is. I am only 38 and I grew up near Tulsa, Oklahoma mostly, but moved to where I am now in North Caroloina. Anyone live near King, North Carolina?
Today it seems that we have no clear definition in the eyes of the beholders and the wearers of the title. Yes, it would seem that Redneck has risen to a title in todays world.
Anyway, if a person likes the word and can get away with using it today then that's ok for them. I am feeling pretty happy to remain behind and hang on to my roots and the way the world I grew up in unfolded the meanings of certain rich words to me. The reasons for not using them or using them just can't change from one generation to the next without someone getting confused or offended. This has happened right here before our eyes and debates are inevitable. More debates to come I am sure.
I don't judge nor label people anymore. I have learned to accept people as they are without labeling them in any way. Of course there are limits to this especially when someone is grossly hateful or disrespectful. I usually label them after a part of my body along with an adjective.
Last but not least I want to thank Mil1ion for giving the details on posts and threads that break rules and why they get closed. I Didn't want to make it appear that I think moderators are not doing a good job. It just seemed a bit strange to me at times when thread closing actions were taken. I think I can see your point. I guess I need to walk a few miles in your shoes! What size do you wear? With all of us people to keep an eye on they must be pretty big!
i think i would rather say good ol' country boy if any one asked simply due to the initial meaning behind it(the whole not using a computer thing etc.) but i dont have a problem if some one calls me a redneck.
Long wait on reply, but if you search for ring-tones, look for the tune dixie for your particular cell phone, as for the rear window decal, geez, i see it everywhere look in truck mags, summit, jegs any magazine with aftermarket truck parts.
ok I just finished reading the whole thread...I have been gone for a few days.
And no, I am not a real redneck by any definition of the word. I work inside on a computer. (Hence the reason I am always on.) Now if someone feels so inclined as to call me a redneck, my reply is 'Thankyou'. I do not feel obligated to hurt someone when I am called this, as it does not offend me.
Someone said they use redneck to describe white trash, I use white trash (sorry moderators). As for the dictionary definition of the word, it is only on paper. A culture can change the meaning of a word, or add and delete words out of your book of words. We make the words, not the book we make.
I wold also like to say I am glad this did not turn into a thread war.
To our local disagreer. It is cool, I do not hate you, or dislike you. I am sure we might just get along well in person.
And to whomever said something about some people on this site using too wide abrush against liberals..My brush is not too wide.
In order to be a liberal, you must have certain beliefs. Those beliefs I do not believe in. Therefore, I CAN say that I disagree on politics with ALL liberals and ALL democrats. I may not dissagree with them on EVERYTHING, but most of our political and military beliefs are differant.
I also disagree with some conservatives and some republicans.
Jimmy Dean ....Republican Conservative, Wish I was a Redneck. And dang proud of it.
Hey there Jimmy Dean , "16 tons and what do you get, another day older and Deeper in debt" , from Tennessee Ernie Ford , which could be the theme song for all red necks. I used the term "wide brush" to refer to the def. that RHunt64 gave for red necks. wasn't referring to liberals at all. I'll make this prediction though......The next president of the Country is going to be Wesley Clark. and, he is going to attract voters from all sectors of the political spectrum. I can't wait to see Mr. George W.(I like corporation's better than the voters) Bush debate Wesley Clark. It won't be easy and it'll get very , very messy because Carl Rove and his ilk will try to destroy the Reputation of Clark before it's all said and done. sk
I stand by my God, my country, my sworn honor, and my pride. I serve my country with pride, and work hard for my money. I beleive in fairness and being kind to my fellow human being. I guess this makes me a 'Good Ole Country boy. I grew up 16 feet off the line between the village and the town. I'm out at my grandpa's and uncles farms whenever I can. I don't think us blue collar people get the respect from the white collar folks that we deserve. Commercials for investment plans show kids growing up to be doctors and the like. There's nothing wrong with building homes, machining parts, drilling for oil, etc. Just as honorable and more pride attached! Those types that are drunk, loud, and overly obnoxious don't sit well with me. Professionalism and craftsmanship- on and off duty or the job. God bless the U.S.A.
I think the blue collars are not well represented, or respected. I believe they (we) do a more i,portant and truelly harder job. The world went around for YEARS before big corporations, but it has almsot always had its farmers, ranchers, hunters, thatchers. Just my two cents, where is our respect?
one thing that makes me mad is when city people say something negative against farmers...if it wasnt for cotton, wheat, corn, dairy or any other farmers, those people wouldnt have food on the table or certain clothes on their back.
and y'all should listen to the song called " a few more rednecks" by the charlie daniels band..that'll help clear up what a redneck is.

Rebel, I do not know exactly what you do for a living, but any blue collar worker get more respect form me than 99% of a white collar worker. I am not saying that they haven't worked their way to the top either, but I know plenty of both. And the blues work alot harder and complain yes, and have alot more pride and respect.
I'll second that notion! I am a mechanic and I keep the equipment on the road that hauls everything we use and need as a whole country. Without the enduring people who grow the crops and build, maintain and operate the equipment that makes all of this possible then how strong would our country be today? I will not leave out a very under appreciated blue collar worker that is entwined with the transportation industry. The people who build and maintain our roads and highways.
Great ideas alone cannot make one person or country better than another. The actions and work it takes to make it a reality rules supreme. Some of those have died in the attempt to accomplish the goals (ideas) of others. I don't know of anyone who has died conceiving an idea.
jimmydean, i never said you didnt respect them. i was just referring to the portion of people in the world who dont. im still in high school, but after i graduate next spring, i will be getting into an apprenticeship, either for an electrician, plumber, bricklayer, construction or carpentry. im also interested in being a truck driver. at the time im just a stock/carryout guy at the local grocery store..its about all i can do since im still a minor. but my job does require good memorization skills and theres more work to it than some people might think. especially when im working 30+ hours week and then going to school
