Have a problem, my steering box bracket has a badly damaged mounting hole/flange, almost missing lug flush with top of chassis rail.
The photo shows a good bracket from a bare chassis, I have circled the position of my damaged mounting plate fixing.
Has anyone had a similar problem, repair or replace?
The bracket is about 18" long and riveted to the main frame rail and I can't seem to find a part number in my parts book.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks.
Your bracket has almost the same damage as mine.
I have looked in the chassis parts book and this bracket part number is not referenced it is also not shown on the chassis drawing for the '46 pickup.
Seems to be a phantom part.
Thanks once again Tacomacream.
What year is your pickup, this is the first time I have seen a steering box bracket that length on a jailbar chassis. All brackets I have seen are approx 1/4 the size of your bracket, as per the above chassis manual depiction. They normally only mounted on the chassis between the front engine mount bracket and the rear front spring hanger not all the way back to the gearbox mount.
Grant,
My 1/2 ton pickup was first registered on 01/01/46.
The photo shown in my original post is exactly the same as my bracket but I pulled this photo off the net, it is also the same bracket as Tacomacream's.
The part number shown stamped "21C5132" is not in my '28-47' green book.
In the green book the short bracket 78-5104 is for 1937-1941 Pickup and 82Y 5102 for 1938-1947 122" W/B Truck.
In my green book there is no mention of a bracket for 1942-1947 pickups/comm's and the drawing for the '46 pickup chassis does not show any bracket.
It's been my experience that nearly all of these will have, at least, a crack on that tab. My opinion is they weren't designed strong enough, which allowed the steering box to flex on the mount. Best to repair it and beef it up at the same time.
The now defunct JobLot Auto was the only source for these, that I'm aware of.
Thanks for the advice , email sent, seems to keep a good range of parts, new to me.
Started to look at the repair option, got hold of some 1/4 thick 2" angle and a friend has offered to weld a couple of fillets about 1" apart for strength. This plate then can be bolted onto frame rail, I don't have welding equipment or the skill.
Daggers
That's what's great about restoration when one isn't worrying about lost points at a car show. I'm glad your friend is going to weld up a beefy bracket to reinforce a part that has a recurring history of failure. Weight and manufacturing cost has always kept automakers walking the line, and every part can't last forever....
