Can anyone tell me if there is supose to be a bracket or doubler on the lower aft edge of the box side on an 48 F-68. Looks like spot welds use to hold some sort of angle bracket at this location. Any pics of what it should look like would be great. Thanks
Thanks a lot- looks like I can fab up a close approximation to that. Now if I could find a tail gate. Gramps took the new one off in 1948 to put grain boards across the back and it hasn't been seen since. Anyone know of ones where abouts 21" x 54" for this model of box!
The gates for the larger trucks show up on eBay every so often.
I know the farmer used to either take them off or cut a square out of the middle panel and install a sliding door so they could unload grain. I've seen a few of them, it's a real pain to see an otherwise nice gate with a hole chopped into it.
I have like new gate for my F-2, I just need to fine the time to redo the replacement box so I can install it. The box I have on my F-2 now is one I patched together quite a few years ago.
Yah, if you look at the front side of my picture, the sqare patch is where the grain shoot was! Then they topped the box with boards, so a full load of grain really bowed the sides out of the old girl, working at getting it all straightend up, new boards etc.
Half the fun of having a bigger truck is talking to the old farmers who had them when they were new. I've talked to a lot of older guys who used the bigger trucks, not just for farming but for other work too, and some of the things they used to rig up to get the job done. It's really interesting. When you're talking to them you can see some of their youth returning as they're eyeing up the old truck.
