That spot looks fairly tame in comparison with many. The underlying structure looks sound. The most straightforward explanation of the repair process is to remove the rusted metal, shape and weld in a replacement panel, fill and finish. Naturally the devil is in the details so if you are not skilled in metal shaping then perhaps you could find someone locally who would do this work for you. If you would like to try your hand at metal shaping then a good start would be an inexpensive shrinker/stretcher from HF and a few DVDs from Ron Covell on the subject.

Look up 56panelford's truck thread. He did patch panels on the roof gutter area. He did a great job and took lots of pictures.

Just in case you were interested in how a professional metal guy repairs a 56 roof take a look here: Metal Finishing and Rust Repair - Hot Rod Network
I know Chris Travers (owner of this truck) and his specific orders for the roof repair was that it was metal finished, that is, NO bondo. This job cost him in excess of $6K so it's not cheap but it is beautiful when done correctly. Even if you choose not to go this route, there are many photos in this article that will give you a good view of the underlying structural metal in the roof/drip rail areas.

Interesting and informative article, thanks. But I would be wary of taking my truck to a shop called Chopit Kustoms, owned by Gary Chopit! LOL

Perhaps after reading this article you won't see as much humor in this man's name and craft. Kustomizer Gary ?Chopit? Fioto a True Original died May 30, 2016 - Hot Rod Network

Thanks for sharing Charlie. Would love to find a guy like "Chopit" around the St Louis area.
