I am looking for some guidance on the roof of my 56 big window. I haven't found a metal repair part for the front edge of the roof. I have found a fiberglass roof panel. It states it can be glued on and will hold just fine. I am a little concerned about the bonding and continue bonding of the fiberglass to the old metal. Can anyone give me some suggestions/experience on the matter. And, does anyone know of a repair panel for the metal? Thanks.
i know this sounds harsh, but the best thing is to do it right or dont do it at all. I would locate a trashed donor section and cut what you need. Take extra and if you dont feel comfy doing the cutting, fitting and welding, pay someone. fixing rust with glass, bondo etc will always come back to haunt you later. been there done that.
Good luck
Steve
From what I understand most of the bodyshops are now using panel adhesives for most of their panel repairs. I recently put new inner and outer patch panels on my 56 doors. I welded the inners but use the panel adhesive on the outer patch. Seems to be a strong bond. I assume it would bond metal to fiberglass. I used the 3M Duramix brand. They make different adhesives for different applications. Can you make your own metal patch panel? Seems it would need to be shaped on an English wheel if it was the roof top piece. I may have to do this later so I would be interested in what you decide to to.
Thanks Steve. Your thoughts are like mine, however, I don't know where any donor cabs are. If you know of any please let me know.
itll turn up buddy, theres some great guys on here thatll prolly come to your rescue. im looking for a wraparound rear section myself in the waco area. Hopefully one will turn up, cause Id hate to spend for a new section.
can you post a picture of the bad section, I know of a donor roof section here in Tucson, might be able to help. you might also want to scrape out the seam sealer and see if it is the roof skin or the gutter or both
MM, not a big deal at all. If you can cut, grind and weld that is. I took a 5" section from my 56 eyebrow and made a chipboard pattern and cut a piece to fit. After it was welded and ground, it was as new. The 3m adhesives stick like grim death by the way. They are in wide use for fast, sure repairs on fleet and public transport systems. I will post b4 / after pics in gallery. Good luck.
