It's been a while since I have been here. First of all, sorry to all of you that requested OBS parts that I didn't get to. Through a house remodel, a blown motor in my crew cab, and a trans rebuild in my 93 4x4, among other things, I haven't had time to breathe. Sometimes life gets in the way. An interesting development has come around. I met a guy with a complete, running 95 F250, with a first gen Cummins swap in it, which is a little *******ized, but runs and drives. He is a young kid, and doesn't have the experience or means to correct the problems with it, and is willing to trade me straight across for my 94 supercab IDIT 4x4. I was going to drop a couple grand into an IDI motor for my crew, to try to get to 300hp. I can't think of a good reason not to take his Cummins and drop it in there, and with some tinkering and a little fab, I can get to 300 hp easily and have the capacity to go higher for less coin. It is a first gen 5.9 out of a 93 Dodge with an auto trans and transfer case out of a 92 Dodge. It is all mechanical, with a manual overdrive trans. (switch on the dash he says?) Don't worry, I am not abandoning the IDI, I currently have eight trucks in my yard!

Thoughts?...GO!
Thanks,

The B series Cummins engine is without a doubt an excellent platform for a performance build. Easy to find engine, stock and performance parts are plentiful. I call it, the small block Chevy of diesel engines. Many Ford purists do not like seeing these powerplants swapped into an F series truck. I looked into swapping a 5.9 in place of the IDI in my 84 F250. I guess if I ran into the right situation, I would have done it. But to start at zero and have to buy and or build the components to swap the engine in, and regearing the axles. The cost of doing it, not including the cost of an engine was in the neighborhood of $3-4,000. And then anyone selling one of these engines wants top dollar for it. After crunching numbers, it just didn't make any sense to go that route. To make a long story short, I decided to completely rebuild the IDI and install a turbo. I guess my thoughts are, if you can score a sweet deal on all the stuff to do the swap; go for it.
for the money it is going to cost to put that engine in a ford, you can build a heck of an idi. my vote is leave the gold plated cummings for the dodge boys

That's what I'm saying, I looked into doing it myself. Not worth it to me, I built my IDI. Everyone thinks the Cummins is like gold. Good engines, not a cost effective swap.
But it is already in a Ford. Everything I need is there. It is currently in a 95 F250 Supercab. I have all of the parts, just need to clean some things up.
I'd go w/ the cummins. IMHO Cummins makes the best engines on the road. I like my 6.9, but the cummins is a more modern engine, easier to get power out of and should get better milage. If I were in your place, I couldn't get the title signed over quick enough.

I agree. Ford should of made Cummins their diesel plant instead of international and their BS failures and problems. Ford = good truck, ****ty engine. Dodge = ****ty truck, good engine. You do the math. If a swap can be done CORRECTLY, I'm for it. I've got two international engines and have now learned to hate BOTH of them.....
i still would not do it. my stock 7.3 other than added turbo with just about 500k miles on it will walk away from just about every gold plated cumming it meets on the road, even the ones that are making 5000 hp and getting 200 mpg.

Omg, LOL! This guy! If it wasn't so stinkin expensive, I'd slam a 3116 Cat in my truck with either a small Allison or an Eaton FSO8406A manual; **** everyone off!
3116 is ok, the 3216 is a much better engine. or the C-7 acert if you want electronics.
but the ultimate small inline six is the DT-360 international.
the DT360 can be bought usually for around $500 running, and after you pull it out of the bus you can recoup half the purchase price scrapping the bus. some even come with allison autos.

If only I could slam a CAT 3116 in my 86 dually.. I have that engine in my GMC topkick.. I love it. runs great, uses no oil..a little fussy to get started when it's below freezing out..but If I leave it plugged in it fires right up..
truck sat for almost 6 months, got in and turned the key, and it fired up as soon as I turned it to start. love that 3116..
I have no experience with the 5.9/6.7 cummins engines..they seem to take a beating in Yard goats shuttling 48', and 53' fully loaded trailers around 24 hours a day....
Might as well. If for no other reason than you can probably tune it up and sell it to some Cummins enthusiest, and then buy Justin's 500HP IDI with the money! :P

Sounds like you already answered your own question. All the hard work is done.
