2016 F150 LB 4X4. I bought a tailgate seal kit and installed it. I then went on a hunting trip to North Dakota and spent 2 days driving gravel roads. Holy moly, did I have dust in the box! As I look at it better, the tailgate does not have square corners which leaves a huge gap for the dust to come through. Does anybody have a fix for this? It is so bad, I cannot imagine if I lived on a gravel road. I could literally scoop the accumulated dust out with a shovel after only 2 days!
Have you checked where the bed floor meets the bed sides? I believe most of them have gaps there. Mine does and even with tailgate seals, I get dust in mine. A couple of weekends ago we went camping and the RV park had gravel roads. Even though I wasn't on them very far, I still got dust in the be.
From what I've been reading on other sites, you should not use anything with silicon in it to seal the gaps. It can corrode the aluminum. I have a spray in liner so the caulk would be on the liner and not the bed. I haven't done anything yet, but might see how much trouble it would be to spray a heavy coat on the gaps.
It is coming in from around the tailgate. The gap in the bottom corners due to the non-square corners measures around an inch by a couple inches (it varies a little and pinches down to nothing)....that is going to be really hard to seal. That is why I am wondering if anyone has any ideas.
I'm amazed at how big those gaps are. It's embarrassing almost...Would like to see pictures of the tailgate kit you installed. Didn't even realize such a thing was possible.
Do you have a tonneau cover or canopy in place? I have the same problem on the dirt road to my cottage with a tonneau cover. I found it was less dusty if I opened the cover while on the dirt road. I installed tailgate seal which helped a bit but did not eliminate the problem
onug,
I maybe didn't describe it well. It isn't poor craftsmanship...it is the design of the tailgate. The corner is curved, thus creating a large gap between the bottom left and right corners and the box. the large gap is only due to the curved corner. If it was a square corner, the small gap could be taken up by the seal kit I installed. The seal kit is just a rubber seal bought at a truck accessory store (could probably buy any door seal and it would help). I will try and get a picture.
