Inertia Switch

Hello
I was wondering if anyone could tell me where the inertia switch is located, and how you shut it off.

Thanks
Patrick

It should be on the firewall, behind the clutch/brake pedal assembly in the cab. There is a red plunger type switch. I do not remember if you push it down, or pop it up. It is protected by a black collar for safety. I think you push it down. To activate it, just take a small screwdriver and pop it up.

Depends on the year. I know in the Early-mid 80s it was located on the firewall on the passenger side and in 92-96 it was located in the passenger kick panel up at the top. As for 87-91 I dont know it's exact location.

What's an inertia switch? I never knew I had one. I'm guessing that this is something to turn the fuel pump off or something if the truck tips over?

It is on fuel injected vehicles. It kills the power to the fuel pumps when the vehicle encounters a hard enough bump. It's a great way to shut the pumps off to relieve the system of pressure for fuel filter changes, etc.

Non-fuel injected do not have a inertia switch.

Any vehicle with an electric fuel pump SHOULD have an inertia switch. It keeps the pump from flooding the engine bay with gas if a fuel line ruptures in a collision. Some carb vehicles use an electric fuel pump, so they have an inertia switch.

Brain flatulance on my part. I've either had old vehicles with mechanical pumps or FI.
