So I have a 1999 F250 with a v10 in it. about a month ago I was driving down the highway for about an hour or so and all the sudden out of no where my rpms start going up. I pulled over and had the truck towed home. So now the truck works fine in reverse however in the forward gears you have to rev up to about 2500+ rpms to get it to move forward. Its as if your riding with a new driver learning to drive a 5 speed and are riding the hell out of the clutch except it never actually engages. Im assuming the forward clutches of the internals are fried and probably need to replace the transmission however when i drained the tranny fluid it came out bright pink/red and did not smell or anything. then when i drained the t-case, it was dark brown/black and smelled horrible. So now im curious if its something maybe to do with t-case instead of the tranny. im going to be very frustrated if i waste a bunch of money on a trans and it turns out to be the t-case this whole time. Any ideas or advice? ways to check etc ? both are drained at the moment so neither of them will shift into anything.
If the transfer case is bad it will be bad in reverse and forward. The truck also won't hold in park. If it holds in park and it works in reverse then the transfer case is fine.
Your problem could be loose feed bolts. These bolts are under the valve body, inside the pan. If they loosen you can lose drive.

Agree. Had that happen on my 2004 V10, 4R100 Trans. According to my Trans guy, known problem with them.
