Firing order

Stopped in a local shop today and they had a 79 F350 with a new rebuilt 460 in it. Also had a 4 barrell intake. The engine runs but shakes like carzy. Like it is miss firing.

Since this has a 4 barrel I'm guessing it is from a car. Were there any different firing orders for these 385 engines. The owner pulled 2 plug wires off and the engine settled down, put them back own and right back to shaking.

I have to go back tomorrow for service on my car any suggestions that I can share?

Oh firing order on front of intake is followed.

I don't know of any other firing order than: 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

If the two wires were puled off and it ran better, I would think those two are on the wrong cylinders. And...I wouldn't let a repair shop do anything to my truck if they don't know enough to straighten out how that engine is running.

Once firing order is confirmed look into balance.

Post 3 here, or search "balance" & "Numberdummy" in the 385 series forum via the advanced search option and find this same info dozens of times in different threads:

TG, Not a problem with David the owner, this is a crate engine installed by someone else. When I went back yesterday he thinks it is in the valves. He is about my age been working on old Ford engines both street and race for a while. He is my go to with my FEs. He was also sure of only one firing order. Just thought I'd ask.

They got the issue with my old Taurus done yesterday so I'm not headed back, so let's lay it down.

FWIW, I think all 460 were 4bbl. Some cars had 2bbl 429s, but all the 460s got 4 hole mixers.

Thanks. Let's call this one done. I was hoping for a 1st night answer. No plans on going back til another need arises.
