Disconnected fuel selector switch, any problems?

1988 F250 XLT Lariet, 460, EFI, 4x4, C6, reg cab, long bed

I'm embarrassed to ask this but oh well. If I remove the fuel selector switch, the one in the dash to the left of the steering column, will this cause a problem with fuel delivery to the engine? Does this somehow disable anything?

Yeah, your fuel pumps won't turn on. It needs to be wired so one of the tanks is always "selected".

You also need to connect the fuel level sensor to the dash gauge. That signal also goes through the fuel tank selector switch.

That's sort of an odd question. Why do you want to remove the switch?

I don't want to remove the switch permanently. But I had temporarily removed the switch along with the rest of the trim around the instrument cluster. The truck was sitting like this with the dash apart for a while.

Then I took the truck for a test drive for something unrelated to the dash. Never gave any thought to the condition of the dash. The truck started and I got about 1/2 down the road where it sputtered and died. My wife helped me tow it home.

I was scratching my head over this, came to the conclusion that it might be that fuel selector switch. Installed the switch and was back in business.

I was asking the forum about this just out of paranoia, just to make sure it was just that simple, and that I wasn't over looking something else.
