My buddy just got an 87 F250 4x4 automatic w/ carburated 460.It has been sitting for long time.We put 10 gallons of good fuel in it and some Sta-bill gas .Drissoled a little gas down the carb and got her to fire but she would only stumple for a few seconds. After several tries we believe she is not getting fuel to the carb because when you work the linkage it never squirts any fuel in.In reading the manual, much to my suprise, found it has an electric fuel pump shut off under the dash which we located and checked. It seems to be down in the correct position.WHERE IS THE PUMP and shouldn't we hear it run for a second when we turn the key? Also it appears the tanks switch is not operating as there is no change when switching with the key on.I never knew they put electric pumps on carburated motors back in 87......also are dash tank switches (switch looks the same)and tank switch valves the same on an 88 f350 460 FI as the 87 f250 460 CARB ?How about the fuel shutoff valve?

No it will not come on when you turn on the key. The starter solenoid has to be energized or the oil pressure has to be up for the fuel pumps to run.

It is not supposed to do anything when you switch it unless the engine is cranking or running.

87 and 88 are completely different fuel system. I do not know of a fuel shutoff valve on an 87 or 88.
anybody else out there?......this 87 definitly has a fuel shut off under the dash....I have seen it and it references it in the manual.....would it be the same for an EFI vehicle?

You asked "How about the fuel shutoff valve?". You do not have a fuel shutoff valve on your truck unless someone put it in.
I think what you are talking about is the Inertia Fuel Shut-off Switch and yes you do have one of those, or should. Yes it would be the same switch as on an 89.
I gave you a complete fuel-wiring diagram of your truck.
If you have any other questions please ask.
