I was wondering if anyone had some luck on changing their stock oil pressure setup (it's just a dummy gauge), to a real time reader, on any newer models of rangers?
This spring I had the back of my speedo out all ready to do the conversion, but I couldn't find any thing close to the resistor that needed to be jumpered.
So I pretty much gave up on it, then I had heard some rumors that all you need to do is change out the oil pressure switch with a oil sending unit, and bam, you have a real time unit.
Does any one know if there is any truth to this? If so, what type of sending unit will I need?
Yes, I converted my 1999 3.0L FFV. I did the same thing, pulled
the instrument panel, and never did find the 20 OHM resistor
that is supposed to be in series with the gauge, and the sending
unit "SWITCH". So, all I ended up doing is changing out the
"SWITCH" with an analog oil pressure sending unit. Since the
analog sending unit is a lot bigger than the "SWITCH, you may
need a 90 degree coupling with your 4.0L.....Good luck!!
Anyone know what model/year of car to specify to get the correct sending unit? I believe oil press (and water temp)gauges need to be 'matched' to the sending unit in terms of the proper voltage range specification. ??
I'm not sure if this is Bob Ayer's truck (it belongs to a Bob but I didn't see a last name anywhere), but this fellow did a conversion on his '03 FX4 LII. I'd like to try it, too, but judging from some of his other work he's an electrical whiz (his radio volume changes based on his vehicle speed!!), and I'm definitely not--I still thrill at sticking my tongue on 9-volt batteries. Anyway, it can be done!
