'53 Ford Revival

Hi all, name is Shawn and I wanted to start my thread for my build. The truck is not new to me as I have owned it since the early '90s

This was my second truck, it was a daily driver for years till it developed a knock in the engine. Being 40 years old at the time it developed the knock, a friend said that it needed a rebuild. So I started to get the engine out and found out shortly after my first son was on the way. The truck got pushed to the back burner, life does get in the way sometimes.

Well now its been over 20 years since the truck has been parked. Wish I had never started getting the engine out as at least I could of kept cranking the truck and moving it all these years.

I can tell you one thing, working on these trucks is much easier with the internet, you can find out all kinds of things nowadays.

I don't have many photos of my truck from back then and the few I did have I lost in a house fire a few years ago.

Here is a pic of how she sits right now, trying to get her back to the new house so I can work on her a lot more.

Living in Florida one of these storms has dropped a limb on her and cracked the windshield and dented the hood and fender. Rust in normal spots at the cab corners and some places on the fenders and door bottom on passenger side.

Thanks for the great site and all the posts so far I have read through. Looking forward to keep this updated and any help everyone can lend.

Thanks,
Shawn

Welcome to FTE Shawn!
What a great project, A 53 Deluxe and it looks like it's got most of the trim pieces.

Welcome to FTE! I'm looking forward to your build.
Be sure to get a shop manual and the master parts catalog. 1948-56 Ford Truck Master Parts Catalog CD - HiPo Parts Garage
They are very helpful.
Take lots of pictures, then take some more. Pictures sure help when you are trying to put something back together and you don't remember how it went. It seems so simple that you will never forget when to take it off. Then 5 minutes later, you are scratching your head wondering how you forgot how it went.

Welcome to this forum. It's nice to see another '53. Do you still have the 215 in it? Are you going stock, or doing substantial modifications?

Thanks all for the warm welcome. Plans right now are to probably do a frame off restore. Of course trying to keep costs down right now, so I will most likely not be doing a ton of body work right now. Once I get it back to a drivable state then I will slowly work on the body more and more.

I am located in High Springs Florida (North Central) yes it does have most of the trim pieces, I am missing one of the trim rings from around the headlight. I had lost that a long time ago. Still has the ford logos on the rear fenders too.

Harrier - Thanks I have read your whole thread so far so you have gave me a lot of inspiration. One problems is I started some of this work 20 years ago so pics are not current. I do plan on doing lots of pictures on what I continue on though.

Jvmcc - Yes it does still have the 215 in it right now, it is not seized so my plans right now is to try and keep it. Once I can get it out and dig in a little deeper I will know more.

Thanks all

Welcome from another Floridian. We're not that far apart. Reply and soon you will be able to PM. There are several of us within a day driving distance and will be more when the snow flies a little north of us.

Welcome to FTE! Nice truck. Those Ford script emblems are off of a '41 truck. There was one on each side of the back of the hood and one in the center of the dash.

Thanks Ray, glad to be here and howdy neighbor Good to know there are some other members nearby also.

Mark - Thanks for that info! After Abe told me those were not original I was trying to find out what those might of come off of. I like them and I will most likely keep them though they are not original to the truck.

Well tried to get the ole girl home before the storm hit. Had a lot of prep before the hurricane and ran out of time.

Did have a locked up drum on the rear drivers side. Some PB Blaster and a hammer did the trick of getting it turning again. We did check that so now just got to get her on the trailer and home.

One stud was rusted pretty bad and broke when I pulled the tire. Figure all will get replaced anyhow.

Not to much to report, did get her loaded up and moved home. Thanks to my youngest son, he helped a lot doing this and cleaning out the truck cab and bed. He still wants to prove that he can drive a stick shift when we get it moving

Want to pull the engine and run through it, but we did not get that far yet. Oil is black but no signs of water or contaminates. Engine does spin freely, so hopefully a quick run through and new gaskets, along with a new distributor cap and wires we can get it running.

Cleaned out and seat removed. She is going to need some patch panels in the cab for sure. Cab corners and some other sheet metal work.

Noticed on the tailate that the original owner must have tried to smooth the tailgate, as you can see the ford imprints on the one side but all is hidden under a flat sheet metal on the outside. I thought the tailgate was toast, will have to dig into it a little more soon.

While the 50th anniversary edition horn button is in pretty rough shape, I had picked up one of the stainless ones a long time ago and did a little hand polishing on it. Will have to get it better, but not bad for a about 5 minutes and some fiber optic polishing paper.
