I was at a legion riders meeting and was talking to a guy and long story short He claims he has both a 292 and a 312 in his shop, mine for a small cost. 312 was in a boat but lost the oil rings on 1 cyl so smoking bad. I so want to get them then see, But my question is I'm thinking on using the 292 block with turned down 312 crank and the rods... and of course heads. Provided they are in fact what he says......He says valve covers say thunderbird and he kind of moves his hand in long motion, like maybe the aluminum ones....we shall see. Your idea of keep the 312 block so numbers all match or what. If they are what he says I'll of course post pictures.

No such thing as numbers matching on any FoMoCo vehicle, that's a GM thing.
1956/57 T-Bird's came with aluminum valve covers, were optional on '55's. People with Ford cars and trucks also installed these T-Bird valve covers.
Then there were valve cover decals, some of which said Thunderbird.
But if the valve covers have 5 mounting holes and are embossed THUNDERBIRD .. it's a 1961/64 390 engine.
Bill I thought the block had some numbers, but of course I could and probably am mistaken. If memory serves me correct the 312 block was weaker due to larger main journal bore and was a weak spot. If there is no numbers what should I look for as far as head numbers. This guy said it was a old Y block. He saw a picture of the truck and said his motor would be perfect for it. I had a 64 T-bird so I know what those motors look like. Does the crank have visible numbers on it and if so do you know what they would be??? any help would be good.

Numbers matching refers to VIN's stamped on engine/trans/rear axle parts, not to FoMoCo casting or ID engineering numbers.
