Ihave acquired an additional engine for my 55 effie and am not sure what it is. THe studs don't come up through the valve cover like the y blocks, It's a pretty big engine, larger than the 302 I also have. Saw a 352 at a car show and it looks to be the same. Then saw a 390 and it looks to be the same.
How can you tell from the exterior exactly what engine is what?
Thanks for your help.

If you look closely at the intake manifold and valve cover area at the front of the engine you will notice that on an FE, FT and MEL that the intake makes up part of the sealing surface and for bolts that hold on the valve cover. If the engine you have has this characteristic then it is either an FE or FT or a MEL engine. As for dispacement you will have to measure the bore and stroke.
The block number on my 1965 390 is on the front pass. part of the block, visible under the truck. The head numbers are between #2/#3 spark plugs, the intake number is under the carb and you can only see it with the carb off.
To truly tell the engine, you have to drop the pan and get the numbers off of the crank. You can try the wire method for the stroke, but, I have not done it accurately twice in a row on the same piston.
