I have a '99 F250 Super Duty 6.8 V10 4 Wheel Drive. I am trying to replace the inner oil seals and need to remove the the diff. the book calls for a Diff housing spreader PT#205-001. Is this tool really necessary?? Where can I get One??
Thanks for your help in advance.
Tried google, no help. Tried eBay and found 3 different ones. $130 to $170 bucks. I was able to pull it out with no problems and replace the seals with a piece of threaded rod and the right size washers. Also went back in fairly easily. so I guess if you are not replacing the bearings you don't need it.
Have put off the job for 6 months because of all the work to replace just 1 seal. Replaced both seals & all the vacuum seals in the hubs as well. They needed it.
I think it's rare for bearing issues because of how rarely the front axle gets used in most cases. Seals fail with age, though, and I suspect we'll be seeing more of these as time goes on.
I had the axle out a couple of times trying to fix the vacuum seals and probably damaged the seal. It's a '99 with 93K and sat for 4 or 5 years. I am surprised there aren't more oil leaks.
