So having overfilled my 6.7 with a litre of oil, I decided to empty it.
As tempted as I was to remove the screw I just turned the drain screw enough to get a very slow drip which I used a coffee can to catch the dripping oil.
After it was all done I saw where I had gone wrong. The 6.7 takes 12.4 litres.
I kept filling until the oil was at the top of the dipstick.
Today, after waiting for the excess to finally drip out, I started the engine............shut it down.............checked the dipstick and it read 0 oil.
No problem.........now I know that you have to wait 20 minutes to get a proper reading. 20 minutes later the oil mark is in the cross hatches half way where it should be. Lesson learned: Read the Diesel Supplement that comes with your new $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Truck.
There was another thread I recently read where the discussion was going back and forth about 13-15 quarts (don't know what that equates to in liters) and which is truly correct. All seemed to agree that the manual says 13 qts and some said mechanics told them to put in 15 which they did with no issues and if you fill it up to the full line on the dip stick then it'll take 15 to get to that level.
Just some more info to help confuse us all.
FYI - When I go to the local dealership they put in 13.
