My son's 88 F150 has an engine that's going bad. It is EFI with AOD.
My question is will an older 302, say a 79 work with the intake EFI system on this truck? What year engines should I look for to help him out? Of course he's young and doesn't have 2 nickels to rub together.
The reason I asked about a 79 is I know of one still in a car with like 60,000 miles on it. Body is shot, so it would be a good candidate
The '79 motor would physically bolt in but it would be brutally low powered, that was the middle of the fuel crunch when V8s like this made 130hp. You could use any vintage 302/5.0 but a late model EFI engine would make the job quicker and potentially get a modest increase in performance.
79 has a heavier block, but it's got a lo-po flat tappet cam in it. It would take fitting it with an EFI cam and the later heads (E7TE's on the 88 motor) to bring the output up to the 88 motor's level. Look at the casting numbers above the starter on the 79 block. If it's a D8VE-6015-A3A then that's an excellent foundation for a stroker motor.
