Just spent an hour or so searching for a fuel leak. All hoses to pump and fuel bowl are good and it appears the leak is coming from the underside of the mechanical pump itself. Local Ford dealer wants $173 for the pump but can get a Motorcraft from Riffraff for $99 or a Delphi from AutoZone for $99 also. Are Delphi pumps comparable to Motorcraft? My original pump lasted over 185,00 miles but this is the second pump from Autozone that has crapped out in less than 30,000 miles ...figure they were Delphi too. I read on here that Delphi pumps are well built and recently upgraded some components to better handle ULSD. Just trying to decide if I should try the Delphi one more time and get the job finished this weekend or order from Riffraff and put it off for a week or two. Suggestions?
I've noticed motorcraft parts are worth the extra money when it comes to these trucks. Mines leaking at 287k miles and i ordered a bar none Efuel kit because i really dont like the factory filter and pump design.
I also think Motorcraft parts are worth it, especially for parts that will leave you cooling your heels on the road shoulder if they fail.
Also, another possible issue with aftermarket parts, I don't know about fuel pumps but I bought an IHC waterpump from a vendor that claimed it was made by the OEM manufacturer. I had another question and called the manufacturer directly. They told me that yes, they made the waterpumps for IHC, but...the pumps they sell to wholesalers have a cheaper seal in them. Not sure if this is a standard practice but it's another reason to stick with Motorcraft for critical parts.
Or, as Shawn suggested you can go with an electric pump system and be done with that mess in the valley.
Thanks for the input. I did a bit more research and did find that AutoZone used to use a manufacturer that was "cheaper" and only offered a 1 year warranty on the pump. Due to problems with warranties, they switched to Delphi and now offer a lifetime warranty. They did give me a 10% discount so it cost me about $90. I needed to save the money this go 'round and didn't want to put it off longer waiting on the order to arrive. If it doesn't hold up, I'll go Motorcraft next time.
