Well,
I finally found my project. Just got a 79 F250 with a knocking rod. It's a 351m, 4 speed 4wd truck. The truck came with an extra 460 engine, ZF5, and transfer case, all still bolted up.
The 460 has a couple of F0TE numbers on some parts so it's at least a 1990 motor, it is FI.
Also, I've got a nice 429 sitting on the engine stand that needs a home. I've got a ton of $$$ in the 429.
Option 1-rebuild/replace the 351m won't work, it's still gonna be a dog IMO.
Option 2- install the 460 drivetrain, get new PCM, and run FI
Option 3- rob the ignition off the 351 and run the 460 with a carb
Option 4- install the 429 with carb
Option 4- install the 429 with OEM FI
Option 5- install the 429 with FAST EFI and 460 serpentine stuff
Option 5 is my most likely plan right now. Would like to daily drive the truck, work it a little, and play on the trails a little. Ive got a diesel truck for real work if needed.
Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated, I'm thinking there's going to be a few obstacles any route I choose, so maybe what I end up with is more important than what it takes to get there. TIA.
I really like you guys!
What kind of things am I going to run into on this? Motor mounts/stands, oil pan, headers, flywheels, etc?
429 is 11.2:1 CR, Comp 292/570 hyd, no intake or ignition system at the moment, C9VE heads with a little work done on them. I want to put the ZF5 behind it. ZF5 is hooked to a Borg Warner t-case, need to clean it to find the model.
Will probably put a medium rise intake to work with the EFI. Leaning towards MSD ignition right now.
Sounds like Option 5 is the most sensible... and insane, all at once!
Definitely throw your built 429 in there with some EFI, or even go carb'd if that tickles your fancy. I tend to run most things with a carburettor due to familiarity, cost and simplicity.
The ZF5 has an input torque rating of about 450ftlb. From the build of your engine I would not be surprised if it tops out around 500hp and 500ftlb. If you are careful of the transmission it should be fine but be aware that any hard launches at peak torque may well blow it.
Sounds like you're aware of the 351m to 429 conversion issues. The motor mounts, the fitment, header space, oil pan, extra weight, 40 years of suspension sag, cooling, the fact that Ford never put anything bigger than a 400 up there for several good reasons...
Option 6... Sell me your 460 (assuming its in good shape) if you live near Washington state? For some reason my father in law won't give me his out of his 89 250...

I think I'm going to hold on to it. I'd like to eventually put a turbo on it after some mods are made. I've found several 460's in my area for sale around $400-$600 range.
