429 VS 460
It all depends on what you're trying to accomplish.
The old saying goes: "There's no replacement for displacement".
Of course, you can wind the 429 up higher, with a bigger cam, and do the same thing a normal 460 can, but then, that same 460 can have the same work done to it and it'll outperform the 429.
Again, depends on what you want to accomplish. The extra stroke of the 460 helps in trucks.

Personally I would take a 460 over a 429 just because of my application. The 429 was built for performance cars and can be used for light duty trucks. The 460 was designed for towing, and had a lot of low-end torque, such needed by 3/4 and 1 ton trucks
I built a 460 for my current daily driver. Approx 460ft lbs of TQ, a scant 275HP all on 8.5:1 compression.
Had a Cobra Jet 429 in another truck and that thing got awesome gas milage! Unaffortunately I didn't hang onto the CJ engine and put a 460 into that truck after the 429 gave out. My gas milage at that point was just about cut in half. Sold the truck as the 460 was a cheap-o reman and it gave out shortly after the warranty expired.
You could go either way, but it seemed to be that if you are concerned with gas milage, the 429 is not a bad option.

8.5 compression and a dead cam will kill gas-mileage in any engine. The 429 probably had some decent compression, hence the great gas mileage.
For instance, going from a 2bbl 360 with horrible compression (low 8's), to a 390 with 11:1 and a Holley 750cfm carb, I went from 9-10MPGs to 15 on the highway, in the exact same truck.
