I see no reason to use anything but OEM. It's the best balance of flow and filtration. Restricted flow just cuts engine efficiency, which is something OEMs cannot afford these days. If Ford could make their filters any more efficient without compromising filtration they would.
With a turbo (or two) I would not touch the factory system except to change the element for another. NO K&N or aftermarket air filter makes sense.
On my 7.3 PSD I put the Ford/Donaldson (filter as big as a Honda Fit) and it looks a bit like the one on my 2.7. The filter element is about $80! But I never replaced it in 7 years.
I have replaced twice within 10 months, 30,000 miles, 3.5 EcoBoost, on first change out went with Fram and in removing old OEM Ford filter noticed two rows of resin embedded reinforcement rows about a third of the way in from each for and aft side of filter. The new Fram didn't have these and found that within two weeks it had formed a curved surface toward the turbo's side of filter box. Went to local Ford dealer and picked up a new OEM filter, and it had these reinforcement bands. Four months now and tho slightly dirty it still is straight across.
Just a thought I'd pass along, the price difference was about $4.00 more for the OEM.
