air filter

I am going to replace the air filter. The person who had the truck before me put a fram in it. What would be a good one to get

I pulled an STP filter out of the box the other day and it looked pretty good. Not sure who makes it. I also looked at a Fram, and I think their air filters are a little better quality than their oil filters, I just don't want to be caught buying one

"Just out of curiosity, what issue do you guys have with other filters (i.e., K&N and Fram Airhog)? What makes Motorcraft filters better than others?"

A lot of us truck owners live in sandy, dusty, gritty areas.

The air filter is part of the equation to keep the oil and internals from accumulating this very abrasive crap. We universally all agree that frequent oil and filter changes are better than more expensive... long duration, extended interval servicing.

That said then you need to seek out the most bang for the buck to make every 3000 mile 90 changes keep from eating your lunch. The MotorCraft products are relativly inexpensive, absolutly meet EVERY Ford specification, and are rated higher than all the average products out there.

K&N and Mobile 1 are fine but come with a premium price. But at these rapid change intervals are really just a waste of money.

If you do indeed live in a very clean air environment and almost never tow or haul heavy with the gas powered truck then there is a great argument to be made for going with the longer life filters and extended change intervals.

Then we get into the total cost of the vehicle, the POTENTIAL cost of repairs, and how much value you place on the factory warranty.

Probably the worst case of Ford denying a warranty claim was the "Covington C." story of a lady who had a V10 that crapped out and all indications were that the oil was sludged up and she admitted to not following Ford's recommended oil change and service intervals.

What was significant in this story was the extent Ford went to deny the claim. There are many other examples on this issue. Bottom line is Ford and ALL other major manufactures are bleeding red ink and EVERY chance they have to deny a warranty claim they do.

So... I say it is real prudent to exactly Follow FORDs recommended service schedule, use their recommended products, or at least something that meets or exceeds the specs.

MotorCraft oil and filters are available, inexpensive, and get the job done.

All the advertising of the competitors is mostly hype, big bucks at play. NONE of the aftermarket or competitors will back up thier claims by offering to step in, if a Major manufacturer denys your warranty claim, and pay for all necessary repairs.

I agree that the MC filters are good and inexpensive - fred as always has a lot of good points - I am not a personal fan of fram products (just cut open an oil filter and it makes you wonder) As far as the k&N, part of the reason they have more flow is they just let more through the filter, end of story. Tests have proven that there is a direct relation to paticulates in the oil to the % more air flow that the K&N provides. I think they have there place in high performance applications wher reliablity isn't as much of a factor but when looking at your vehicle to give you uncompramised performance for 200k miles its just plainly easier to change them often with just a good overall product. MC filter meet this to a T. Just for example/Discusion I only put 6-8K on my truck per year. I change my oil a 2K (4 times a year), my air filter once per year, my fuel filter once per year, drain my coolant (not a flush, just the radiator) once a year and my total cost to over maintain my $35k truck is under $100/year for MC products. I guess I think this is a cheap precation when I plan on keeping my vehical 7-10years (hard to ignore the new models though, that 3Valve is awfully tempting). I think good maintanence is the key instead of high quality products and longer scheduled maintanence.

I also use MC products, the more expensive stuff just isnt worth the cost imo. K&N Im sure has its place but for the price I willl stick with MC.Also Wix filters are very good products as well they might even make th Motorcraft ones for ford

ever see a bad fouled mass air senser or throttle body from a k&n style filter? i have to many times. just not worth it any more. check the stock paper every oil change and replace it when needed. fred is 100% correct and a lot of car companys are simply saying sorry on warrenty issues araising from the use of aftermarket parts . to many people are thinking cheap when proper is not that much more in costs.
