a/c condenser

I need to replace the a/c condenser on my 86 F150 with a 300.
All the parts houses and websites I've tried show part # 7-4150. The picture and description are identical to my old condenser.
When I order it, what comes isn't anything like my old one and doesn't fit. It's about 3 inches wider and 1 1/2 inches taller than my old one. It's actually wider than the opening in the radiator support.
I found part # 7-4150-1 on Summit but I can't find a picture or description of it anywhere.
Can anyone help me out here?

Welcome to FTE.

Is this factory- or dealer-installed A/C?

That 7-4150(-1) is an aftermarket part number, youz takes yer chances with aftermarket stuff sometimes.

It's factory installed. (XLT Lariat)There isn't even a condenser listed for dealer installed air that I can find.

The parts book shows they used exactly one dozen different variations of these things over the years 1980-89 just in the F Series & Broncos, the major delineations are:

- Gasoline or Diesel powered engine
- Factory or Dealer-Added

For your configuration, it sez:

Motorcraft YJ-234 aka Ford Service Part E7TZ-19712-A
Fits 1984/88 F-Series & Bronco, both gas & diesel, with factory-installed A/C, built from 10/83 (amongst a handful of other vehicles).

Somebody else out here recently was going through similar stuff as you, apparently that part has been superseded with Motorcraft YJ-261 aka E9TZ-19712-B (originally specified for 1988-onwards trucks). But I can't vouch for that claim, I can tell you only what the parts book says.

The parts book (FoMoCo 1980/89 Light Truck Master Parts Catalog) doesn't show any dimensions on these things, you might do some Googling around and call up some vendors and ask them what the dimensions are and compare to what you have.

Collectors Auto Supply in OROVILLE, WA 98844 claims to have two of the originally-specified part, might give them a call.

From "what I've been told", not "what I have done", it is my understanding that when the F-series was converted to R134A, the condenser was enlarged. Supposedly, the latter will fit the earlier models and increase the cooling efficiency, especially if the system has been converted to R134A from the original R12.

After spending a couple of hours trying to install the larger condenser, I can tell you it does not fit. To make it work I would have to make some modifications to the condenser and/or the radiator support. Since mods are hazardous to warranties, that is the course of absolutely last resort.
My guy at AZ put me in contact with Spectra's tech people. They said that with my VIN they can probably solve this. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I take it the line connections and mounts were all off?
If the lines made up and it was just the mounting issue we "could" make it fit but I hear it is the line is the killer of this part, is this right?

I talked to these people on the phone. They deal with a company that builds them by order and they are back logged. Go to my threads I have posted and find the one about ac condenser and you will see the list of dealers that have the original ones. You are looking at a range from 200-400 for a NOS one. The one on the link is less and from what I am told looks exactly as the picture. I have gone through the same problem you have looking for one and the aftermarket ones just dont fit. I was lucky enough today to purchase a donar vehicle that had working ac and has the whole system I need to get mine up and running.

Thanks maverick,
You may have solved my problem. I'm going to wait to hear back from Spectra's tech before I make a move but this may be what I've been looking for.
