Drum Brake Help

I am changing out brake shoes and the piece in the picture fell to the ground. Can someone tell me where it goes?

And why you only pull 1 side a part at a time so you have something to go back and look at.

I did pull only one side, but for the life of me could not find that part on the intact side.

The problem with that method, using one side as a guide, after 20 or 30 years there's no telling who has been in there before and so consequently both sides may be assembled incorrectly so you'd just be repeating the same mistake. Drum brakes are very commonly buggered up. All of the manuals, parts diagrams and websites available online make this kind of work a whole lot less trouble than it was years ago.

I took a lot of photos, have a look, I believe everything is correct in the photos.

True that as that is just what I found on my project truck.

They had both long shoes on 1 side and the short shoes on the other side.
1 of the adjusting cables was broken and they screwed it to a hole on the shoe. I think 1 side had springs in the wrong holes also.
Before

After

Yes that ebrake spring is too long and has been fixed but may need a little more fix to work right/
