Tilt column gurus step inside

Ok, I've searched but haven't found the answer so here goes.

I have a tilt column in my Bronco that is on it's last legs, tilt ratcheting mechanisms are still holding but worn out...the PO used the steering wheel as a grab bar to hoist himself into the cab too many times.

Is a 4x4 tilt column the same dimensions as a 4x2 tilt column, the inside of the cab section...from the firewall to the steering wheel?

I know that there's differences under the hood. The 4x4 column attaches to a steering shaft, then the rag joint.
The 4x2 version connects directly to the rag joint, then to the steering gear.

Can I use a good/solid 4x2 tilt column, can I swap it for my 4x4 column or am I destined to tear both columns apart, scavenging the good parts from one to rebuild the other?

Thanks!

For 78 and 79 ford light duty trucks, 2wd and 4wd columns are the same.

The tilt wheel mechanism itself is the same: 1978/79 F100/350, Bronco & Econoline, but...

The F100/350 2WD A/T & 4 M/T columns are not the same as the F150/350 & Bronco 4WD A/T & 4 M/T columns.

Some of the tilt wheel parts are the same: 1970/80 FoMoCo Passenger Cars & 1978/91 F100/350, Bronco & Econoline. For one example...

Look at this pic for 3B661 .. This is the tilt column (only the wheel tilts) locking lever, its serrations wear down, causing the tilt wheel to no longer lock in place.

E2TZ-3B661-A (replaced D0AZ-3B661-A) .. Tilt Column Locking Lever / Obsolete

PHILLIPS FORD in Phillips WI has 1 = 715-339-3045 / NO other Ford dealer, no obsolete parts vendor has any.

Applications: 1970/78 FoMoCo Passenger Cars except 1978 Fairmont/Zephyr / 1978/91 F100/350/Bronco/Econoline.

1979 FoMoCo Passenger Cars except LTD/Grand Marquis/Fairmont/Zephyr/Mustang/Capri / 1980 Granada/Monarch/Versailles.

Thanks for the help guys.

I found a good deal on a nice, tight 4x2 tilt column...it'd be super easy to swap one for the other if they were the same...looks like the 4x2 column is shorter in length than the 4x4 column...not sure why...both are for auto trans trucks.

Bill, thanks for posting the diagram...part #3B661 is the part I need to fix my column.
I called Phillips and spoke with the parts Mgr. He said he can't locate the part...doh.

I installed a tilt out of a 78 2wd in my 79 4wd. It was a while back that I did this, but I don't recall any problems or modifications with the swap. Its been working fine for 10 + years.
