Here I am asking another question (y'all are probably getting tired of me haha) so I'm wanting to put headers on my '79 f150 2wd. I was gonna put fender exits on but the steering gear box is in the way so I'm either gonna have to go with full length frame exits or hugger headers. What are the pros and cons of each and advantages that they have over each other?
I've been thinking about adding headers to my 2wd f150 as well and share the same concerns. I don't want to tear everything apart and buy a $600 set of headers for my 351m to find out they won't work because of the steering box.
There is almost no info on the web about this particular application.

My major problem is that I have a 460 so I have little to no room for error. I'm pretty sure 70s 4wds don't have the same problem because if their like 80s and 90s model 4x4s then the steering box is farther forward on the frame out of the way from the engine.
It's not a very good picture but this is my main concern. The steering box (not original) is butted up against the exhaust manifold. I'm not sure if a set of long tube headers will fit but I'm hoping huggers will. I'd rather have long tubes just not sure if they'd fit. What do y'all think?
I'm using full length headers on my 390....2.5 in exhaust. No pinching cutting or weird angles. I know it's not a 460 but I thought I'd throw that out there in case some of those peeps pop on and ask the same about their engines.

The full length should have some torque advantage over the shorties but either is much better than manifolds.
If you find "shorties" or "huggers" that are well made and package well in the engine compartment sounds like a good plan to me. Fighting tight fit, overheated captured in place starters and leaks is not good for long term fun.
Also, ceramic coating inside and out really helps keep heat under control in the engine compartment if that is an option.
