Looking for suggestions for a good replacement tire set for my 40 1.5 ton. Wheels are factory and in good shape. Tires still holding air but look pretty dry rotted. Size is 9X20
Yeah, Need to get some pics. Truck is in great shape for it's age although front grill was pushed in from another free rolling truck. Will try and get some this weekend. Checked the tires yesterday for size and double checked the wheels to make sure they were not widow makers
Before committing to the 9" tire you'd be prudent to know your rim widths, and be certain they are spec'd for that wide a tire. That's a big tire for 1940. Widest listed in the Chassis Catalog is an 8.25-20" on a 5" wide rim. The 9.00" would be right for a 6" or wider rim.
If anyone wants to look at their Green Bible and check me on the 5" rim statement they will see listed a 20" x 7" wheel. The 7" wide measurement shown in the Green Bible is based on the old NWRA standard which measured across rim lips. Since the 1940s the standard has been to measure across the inner rim base between lips. Thus the old 7" is a new 5". An old 8" is a new 6". Stu
Part numbers on your wheels will probably be on the dished/concave side flats of the center discs between lug holes, assuming they are Budds. Start looking on your rear outer dual's. This morning I pulled a tire off one with a February, 1940, build date and the Budd number was stamped there. Later Budds have the numbers on the concave rim lips, and on much later tubeless wheels it's along the drop center. If you find your numbers I can look them up. If they are Kelsey Hayes there won't be numbers, sad to say. Just have to measure. Stu
But you don't want the wheels. Yes, they are 5 lug x 8" pattern, and will fit, but GMCs were hub piloted. Totally different mounting system that you don't want to screw with. Stu
I used Power King 8.25X20 on my 1.5 ton. I have no earthly idea how wide the rims are and had no idea there were so many variations before I bought the tires. Thankfully they all fit. I really wish I could have found some U.S. made tires but just couldn't find any in my area. My truck isn't on the road yet so I can't comment on the tires performance.
Nice truck joe. How long you been working on it . Mine is stored back as I am currently working on a 65 Mustang fb. In the meantime, I am gathering info and deciding how I want to restore it
Know what you mean. 4 years on it and was in the rap up stage when I had a fire in the garage on good Friday this last spring. Now having to break the car down and repaint it. Was a bad day
