AC plenum door defrost

So, as soon as I got the blower motor fixed, the heater core sprung a leak, so replaced that and onto next gremlin.

Since I have owned the truck (10 years?) the defrost vents have never worked. I do have vacuum, as I can see all the motors moving when I move selector. When I had the heater core out I could see one door moving correctly, but the door that does defrost is further up.

How do I access that door?

I think I am going to have to open it up to find problem. I'm guessing hinge broke.

I read through this,

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-problems.html

but still unclear. I can even see how to access that door without pulling dash first.

This is on a 1980 F150 with factory air.

I have an 81 w/factory ac and dash is out but ac/heat box is installed so let me see if I can figure out how to get to it and get back to you.

In my '83 I can see the door you speak of by pulling the glove box. Mine is broken also. I manually switch it to vent for A/C in the summer and back to heat/defrost in winter.

Thanks everyone. Dummy me, I have factory manual, and read it after I asked question. It clearly says I need to pull steering wheel, drop steering column, remove instrument panel to access plenum where that door is.

But if anyone has first hand knowledge of any shortcuts I would appreciate. Will probably take a day or two off from work to accomplish this one in any reasonable amount of time of the truck out of commission.

I don't see a way to get to the door with out removing the dash & the box from the truck.
Because the box is 2 parts with the fire wall between them I think you can just remove the inside part to fix the door and put it back together and not have to deal with the AC side.

The other poster saying he can get to the door thru glove box sounds like the doors motor is not working where it sounds like your motor is working.

Good luck on the fix and let us know how you make out.
