AC/Heater vents

1985 Ford F-150 with 302 EFI. Their is little or no air comming out of the defroster when selected. It seems that the majority of the air comes out of the vent regardless of the position that is selected, but that is a very small amount also. Can anybody help?

AC/Heater vents

I had the same problem in my 84

If you pull the cover off of you heater core and look just to the left of it, inside the duct work, you'll see a door. This door is driven by a vacuum motor that is controlled by the heat/air selector switch.

The vacuum motor could be bad, but if it's like mine, the problem is the that door. It has a film hinge on it, and over the years it breaks.

While I had the heater core cover off, I was able to see the door flop around when I switched between the AC and heat/defrost settings.

I was able to position the door correctly to divert the air to the floor/defrost vents. If I moved the control to switch to dash vents, the arm would pull on the door, and the door would switch to the dash.

If I tried to go the other way, the arm would push, the door would flop around and nothing changed. My temporary solution to get through winter was to position the door to heat/defrost, and never switch to panel.

I'm hoping to get around to fixing it this summer. I'm either going to try to rig a new hinge, or preferrably find a new assembly and replace it. I just dread trying to pull all of that duct work out of there to replace it.

AC/Heater vents

i just did a full change over on my 83 f150 from no ac to ac and the duct work is not the bad to change the hardest part about it is the two bolts next to the front fender in side the engine compartment other than that it only took a few hours every thing is interlocking so if all u r doing is the change over should be real quick
