Starting system fault Help please
My name is scott, i am a paving crew mechanic... everyone needs help sometimes.
I am having a problem with my truck (Crane body service truck) It is a 2014 F550 6.7 powerstroke of corse. I have attached video of what my truck is doing. I am starting to get pissed off because here it is 10:00 pm i finally get done early and i cant leave lol
Used to i could disconnect the batteries for a minute then re connect them and be just fine. Then if i unplugged my control box for the hydraulics and stuff from my OBD2 port (Throttle cotrol is all it controls at that plug) it would go away...I am at a loss i have no idea what is going on.
I take that back, it will not let me upload the video. So tiny URL it is.

Do you have a second key handy to try? or access to one?
Is there a rattle inside the key? I have an aftermarket key fob for my 2015 that has a chip inside it that is removable. When it moved enough, it would not start the truck and displayed a start system fault. I opened the fob, re-positioned the chip and glued it in place to solve that problem. Maybe you can do the same? Or the chip was lost from the key?
I always keep a spare key in the truck or with me now days to prevent being stranded.

Because if i go and jump the starter with a wire to the starter itself. I can then go inside cycle key and start it no problem, issue is now i have the wrench and check engine light will hook up here in just a minute to see what codes are...

Then yesterday I hooked up the goose neck trailer and back up to load. Truck started just fine. I turn it off while loading and once loaded I hopped back in to fire her up and nothing again .... its just dead. I fumble around with everything again and move the drive selector to manual then neutral and then reverse and then back to park and still nothing. I then thought I would lock and unlock the truck to see if that might make a difference and accidentally set off the panic alarm. That is so annoying. The only way to get the panic alarm to stop screaming is put the key in and start it ... I thought oh crap it wont start .... :-o Anyway when I put the key in it started right up. (man scratches head)
So this morning Im getting ready to head out for the day and guess what? yepp - no start! DOOH!!!! I checked the parking break issue, I checked the ABS lines, I checked the battery voltage, connectors and looked for corrosion. I manually tested the starter and it is working fine as well as the neutral safety switch ... wth??
So I come inside and I start searching the internet and I find this thread. Grabbed my Key/Fob/Thingy and took it off the key ring so I could open it up. I immediately noticed that it isnt snapped together all the way. After I opened the plastic fob I noticed that the battery is not sitting down inside the little circular holder correctly and the main board that has two tiny little contacts appears to be bent to where they were barely making contact. I completely disassembled the parts, and put everything back together and I made certain that it all snapped into place.
The key fob has never really worked that good. I would literally have to be on top of the truck to get it work and sometimes it would just refuse to unlock the doors. Its always been this way but I guess now I understand why. Then when I dropped the keys a few weeks back it made everything that much worse. Anyway, I wanted to say thanks for posting the clue because I would have never known where to look next.
Cheers,

I only had one key to my 2011 F150. The remote part of my key had not been working for some time and I had not made time to get another key made. I used the key without the remote to lock and unlock the truck. I decided to take my son out for the day to the local waterpark. I had placed the key in my pocket and forgot about it. After about an hour or so, I felt that I still had my keys in my pocket. Since the remote part of the key had not been functional for some time, I paid it no mind. I took it out of my pocket and placed it on the table with the rest of my belongings. After the waterpark closed, (yup, you guessed it), "System Starting Failure" was showing on the dash. It wasn't till the next day that I was able to do more research. I unplugged the battery. I removed and replaced the fuse under the hood. I tore apart the passenger kick panel. Finally, I found a thread talking about the key. I called a locksmith and he made me a copy. After he finished programming it, (it took about 15 minutes), the truck turned on like a charm.
I would call a local locksmith for an extra key. They are way more affordable than the dealership. The one I called even came to me.
